Guatemalan Team Prepares to Leave!
Here is the service team ready to go to work in Guatemala next week! They will leave on August 7 and return on August 15. Remember to support them with your prayers.
Front: Ivy Thompson, Zoe Wichser, Ellie Hands, Buff Grace
Middle: Hannah Keller, Julie O'Reilly, Linda Amrein
Back: Mindy Boynton, Jake Doneux
Our Guatemala Service team members will be immersed in the country's colorful culture while working side by side with its people. We will fly into Guatemala City and be transported to Antigua where we will spend most of our time. While in Antigua we will be working with La Asociacion Nuestros Ahijados, a non-profit organization serving the country's most
destitute children. Our group may build small homes for families that are homeless, go and work with some of the children in the schools and visit babies in the malnutrition Center.
My hope is that when we return home, we will have discovered that our lives have been enriched and deepened forever.
Thanks for all your support, Mindy and Buff
Sue and Frank Langer will also be on the trip!

 Voices 4 Libya
Tuesday, August 21st, 2012 at 7 PM
Ascension Church Fellowship Hall
Bob Bilyk just spent an incredible two hours with our speaker for the 'Voices 4 Libya' event. What an amazing story! It starts with a 3M scientist who has no connection to Libya at all but finds himself organizing ways for ordinary Libyans to be heard and to be seen.
The miracle of modern communications -- websites, Twitter, chat -- really comes into play here to connect the stories of ordinary but heroic Libyans -- stories that seldom unfold in the limited news that we get -- to the rest of the world. Mark your calendar for a memorable evening with Ilya Gorodisher, editor of Voices 4 Libya, an anthology of the Libyan revolution.
Ilya Gorodisher will share stories of ordinary people involved in the Libyan conflict. He will talk about the experience of making of Voices 4 Libya, not a history book or political analysis but a collection of stories -- sad, heroic and tragic - that people chose to tell.
Free tickets will be available at Ascension Church (after services on August 5th and 12th), at the church office and at Valley Bookseller in Stillwater. A free-will offering will be collected at the event.

History of the Role of Women at Ascension
by Betty Erickson
I have been studying the role of women in Ascension Church since its beginning in the 1840's. The first services were held in the homes of John McKusick & Elam Greeley in McKusick's store in downtown Stillwater. By the 1850's the women had organized the "Parish Aid Society" and began to work on the first church building, consecrated in 1853, on North 2nd Street. Their main duties seemed to be housekeeping and fundraising, at which they were very effective. When the church was expanding, a new and larger site was donated by John McKusick, the present site of the church on North 3rd Street. The cornerstone was laid in 1873 and the church consecrated in 1875 by Bishop Whipple. There was a period of hard times in the area after that, and the parish was without a priest for several years. However, in 1886, Mrs. Helen McCluer, president of the Parish Aid Society, initiated a major restoration and refurbishing of the building, including raising money to buy a new organ. It was dedicated on Easter Sunday, April 10, 1887. That night the church was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. The congregation was urged by Bishop Gilbert to build a new church and with major effort by the women and all the parish members, a new building was built on the site of the old, a new organ was provided and the windows, altar, pulpit and other objects were given as memorials. The new church was dedicated on Easter Day, 1888 by Bishop Gilbert.

White Earth Remembrances...
Last bonfire with Rev. Doyle Turner
"Don't save us. On Facebook today, somebody was trying to send out shipments of clothing to the reservations. I responded 'You know, thank you, but that's not going to help. Our people need education. We need tools to help ourselves. We don't want to be saved.' We want to be part of the solution.
We will never be able to come out of poverty if somebody thinks that they can save us."

program officer for Native American/Indigenous Ministries
for the Episcopal Church,

The Multiple Sclerosis TRAM Bike Ride, July 22-27, 2012
Linda Amrein and Jim Christopherson have just completed the MS TRAM bike ride in Northern Minnesota. The M.S. Societyʼs fund raising ride took over 750 riders and hundreds of support volunteers over 250 miles of beautiful northern Minnesota roads through Bemidji, Walker, Park Rapids, Wadena, Fergus Falls, and Alexandria. Some sun, some rain, some wind in our face and some wind at our backs all made for a great ride adventure. Linda had to leave the comfort of her tent and spend most of the night in a storm shelter while Jim slept in a motel. We survive in different styles.
Jim Christopherson had the number "1" fastened to his bike in honor of being the top fund raiser for last yearʼs MS TRAM. He has ridden this event for the past twenty-one years and raised over $170,000.00 to provide assistance for individuals living with MS and to support research to end this disease called multiple sclerosis.
We are the lucky ones. This past year, many people in the world have been struck with illness, loss of employment, or other challenges. Many of us have extended our resources to help them. Over the years, each of us have chosen to support charities that serve the needs of others. These charities need our continued support to carry out their programs. Linda and Jim wish to thank the many members of Ascension Church who have chosen to help the MS Society through our fund raising.
Thank you, thank you! Jim and Linda

W. E. B. DU BOIS SOCIOLOGIST, 3 August 1963
William Edward Burghardt Du Bois. February 23, 1868 - August 27, 1963) was an American civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, sociologist, historian, author, and editor. Historian David Levering Lewis wrote, "In the course of his long, turbulent career, W. E. B. Du Bois attempted virtually every possible solution to the problem of twentieth-century racism- scholarship, propaganda, integration, national self-determination, human rights, cultural and economic separatism, politics, international communism, expatriation, third world solidarity." The first African-American graduate of Harvard University, where he earned his Ph.D in History, Du Bois later became a professor of history and economics at Atlanta University. He became the head of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1910, becoming founder and editor of the NAACP's journal The Crisis. Du Bois rose to national attention in his opposition of Booker T. Washington's ideas of social integration between whites and blacks, campaigning instead for increased political representation for blacks in order to guarantee civil rights, and the formation of a Black elite that would work for the progress of the African American race.
