Last Sunday Supper  Last Sunday Supper    May 27, 2012

First Presbyterian Church, Stillwater, had red-white-blue table decorations to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend.  Our Last Sunday Supper guests numbered 28, two of whom were children.  They were served a picnic style meal of sloppy joes on buns, potato salad, potato chips, carrots with dip, pickles and lemonade.  Dessert was watermelon and/or vanilla ice cream with choice of toppings, nuts, chocolate or caramel sauce.  Chocolate "Chinese chews" also were offered.  Thanks to the First Pres crew, our earliest partner in providing this once-a-month community meal!  Questions about LSS:  contact Linda Amrein, 651-439-7670.

Vacation Bible School
June 11-14, 9 a.m. to 12 noon

This summer kids can explore key Biblical themes through a program created by Buff+ and Mindy from Kate DiCamillo's award winning story: The Tale of Despereaux.  Children will hear parts of the story read aloud, see clips from the animated film, and reflect on them through arts and crafts, drama, and imagining our church to be the castle and dungeon in which the story is set.   Cost is $20 per child, with a family cap of $40. Books are available for $8.00 and are in the Parish Hall for sale.  Sign up with Mindy at church or click here for registration form and information.

Evelyn Underhill

Evelyn  Underhill
Theologican And Mystic (15 June 1941)

To go up alone into the mountains  and come back as an ambassador to the world,  has ever been the method of humanity's best friends.

"The windows of Christ's Mysteries split the [Light] up into many-coloured loveliness, disclose all of its hidden richness...make its beauty more accessible to us...And  within this place we too are bathed in the light transmitted by the windows, a light which is yet the very radiance of Eternity. " E.U.

Evelyn Underhill was born in 1875 and grew up in London. Her friends  included Laurence Housman (poet and brother of the poet A E  Housman) and Sarah Bernhardt (actress), and Baron Friedrich von Huegel, a writer on theology and mysticism. Largely under his guidance, she embarked on a life of reading, writing, meditation, and prayer. From her studies and experience she produced a series of books on contemplative prayer.

Miss Underhill (Mrs. Hubert Stuart Moore) taught that the life of contemplative prayer is not just for monks and nuns, but can be the life of any Christian who is willing to undertake it. She also taught that modern psychological theory, far from being a threat to contemplation, can fruitfully be used to enhance it. In her later years, she spent a great deal of time as a lecturer and retreat director. She died on June 15, 1941.

To see the list of her books, many which are widely read and highly regarded,
