Vit. D for Stroke

" ...and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."

 Philippians 4:7

STROKE: A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or severely reduced. It is a medical emergency. Prompt treatment is crucial for best outcome. The good news is that strokes can be treated and prevented. Better control of the three major stroke risk factors - high blood pressure, smoking and high cholesterol - is likely responsible for the decline in the incidence of strokes.

Symptoms: Call 911 for any of these symptoms, even if they fluctuate or disappear.

  • Trouble with walking sudden dizziness, loss of balance or loss of coordination
  • Trouble with speaking and understanding. Try to repeat a simple sentence - if you can't, you may be having a stroke.
  • Paralysis or numbness on one side of your body or face. Try to raise both your arms over your head at the same time. If one arm begins to fall, you may be having a stroke. Similarly, one side of your mouth may droop when you try to smile.
  • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes, such as blurry or blackened vision or seeing double.

Prevention of stroke is similar to prevention of heart attack:

  • Lower the amount of cholesterol and saturated fat in your diet. Restrict animal fat. Red meat, cheese and butter are the main sources of saturated fat in the American diet. Eat more fish, chicken and legumes for protein. Eat five servings of fruit and veggies daily and lots of whole grains, organic is best. Minimize salt, sugar, starches (eg. white bread, white pasta, white rice, pastries.) Use indirect heat, baking or broiling, instead of frying and sautéing.
  • Control high blood pressure.
  • If you smoke, quit. If you don't smoke, don't start.
  • Control diabetes.
  • Exercise regularly. It can lower blood pressure, increase your good cholesterol, improve overall health of your blood vessels and heart, control diabetes and help lose weight. Gradually work up to 30 minutes most days.
  • Keep a healthy weight.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all. It can be both a risk factor and a preventive measure for stroke. Binge drinking and heavy alcohol intake raise the risk of high blood pressure and of ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.
  • Relax deeply daily. Pray. Try mind-body practices: meditation, T'ai Chi, yoga.
  • Medications: if you've had a stroke, your doctor may recommend anti-platelet or anticoagulant medication to help reduce the risk having another.

Mentor Meeting

Become a Mentor to Help a Family in Need

Come hear about being a mentor for a family in need.

April 29th at 11:15 am in the Parish Hall.

Current Mentors from the program will be there to answer questions.

Mentors Needed

Ascension is excited to sponsor two Stillwater families to help them become more self- sufficient.  We are partnering with Episcopal Community Services  (ECS) to offer this parish-wide program, in which we can all be involved in some way.   The official title of the program is the Supportive Housing Program, but the families with which we will work already have housing.  We will work with them to further their goals such as securing more education, getting job training, or learning financial planning.

We are in need of 1 to 2 mentors per family in order to begin our sponsorship.  A mentor is responsible for contacting the family by phone once a week and in person once a month.   A mentor is a person who encourages, listens and shares time with a family that is struggling to become self-sufficient.

A mentor is not working alone.  A committee of Ascension members has formed that will support the mentors by securing donations of items the family may need, helping to organize the finances of the sponsorship, and providing other support as needed.  Please note: There is no financial obligation required.  All funds are provided for by Ascension and are funneled through the Ascension committee.

If you have questions, please contact

If you supported the Guatemala mission trip by ordering plants, the plants will be available for pick-up at Ascension, on the front lawn, Saturday May 5th from 12 noon until 2pm

It will help us greatly if you are able to pick up your plants at this time.  To make other arrangements, please call Brenda Doneux at 430-9193 or email bkdoneux@msn.com

Urgent: Car Needed by the End of April

Do you have an extra car you aren't driving or are you getting a new car or downsizing to one car?  Here is the perfect opportunity to help out a family in need.

A Stillwater family that is participating in the Transitional Housing Program through Episcopal Community Services is in need of a car.

They have secured funding for $4000, but need to spend it by the end of April.

Here is criteria they need to abide by in order to get the funding:

  • 120,000 or fewer miles
  • Less than 10 years old, which will make it a 2002, although the funders were willing to move that to a 2000 for super low mileage (but that was an exception)
  • It'll have to pass an inspection
  • The family would like it to look nice, but it does not have to be in perfect outside condition

If you can help, please contact

Cindy Parsons of ECS at 651-439-2641.

Human Rights

and

Constitutional Amendments

understanding the upcoming Marriage Equality Amendment through discussion, compassion, and education, an evening of exploration.

Tuesday, May 15, 5:30 - 8 pm

Stillwater Public Library

Some questions to be explored:

What does the Preamble of the Constitution simply say when it talks about the "inalienable rights" (Life Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness) given to us all?

What happens when those rights are taken away, and a person is deprived of the right to be who they are, at birth, as God made them?

Does the amendment solve a problem in the narrowest way?

What are the effects of the amendment?

How do we put a human face on all of this?
