Lenten Program : Deepen Awareness
Lent is a time to come to know ourselves more deeply. Through fasting we get in touch with our bodies. Through self-examination we listen to our minds. Through prayer we come to know ourselves more as God knows us. In this deepened awareness we acknowledge the ways in which the human mind and body are made. Some of those ways block us from the divine and the fullness that God wants for us. Some of those ways exquisitely attune us to the divine.
Come on Sundays during Lent at 11:30 a.m. in the parish hall for lunch and a deeper look at ourselves and God. Sign up by calling or emailing the office:office@aechurch.org, 651-439-2609. Cost is $12 for the booklet and lunch donation. First Sunday in Lent is February 26 and goes through March 25.

30 Hour Famine
The St. Croix Valley Youth Ministers Association (SCVYMA) is hosting their annual 30-Hour Famine to raise money and awareness for those in need both locally and globally. For the past 10 years, between 5 and 8 Stillwater area churches have brought together 100+ junior high students for a weekend of fun, sharing and caring. Students will raise pledge money which will be given to World Vision to support their work of feeding the children of the world. Participating churches this year includes First United Methodist, Christ Lutheran, Lake Elmo, Christ Lutheran, Marine, Ascension, Saint Paul's Lutheran and Our Saviors Lutheran.
On Saturday afternoon Feb. 25th, local youth will participate in a food scavenger hunt to collect the current most needed items for the St. Croix Valley's community food shelf, Valley Outreach. Students will be in Stillwater neighborhoods between 1:00 and 3:00pm collecting food which they will then deliver to the Food Shelf. The items they will be most focused upon collecting are: shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, baby food, diaper wipes, diapers, canned fruit, tuna, juice boxes and cash or checks made out to Valley Outreach. Last year the 100+ youth who participated in this annual famine contributed $1,600.00 to World Vision and collected 1 ton of food for Valley Outreach. The students will begin their famine right after lunch of Feb. 24th. This year Ascension is sending 10 youth to participate in the famine at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. They will break the fast with a pasta feed at 5:00 pm that Saturday evening. You still have time to register so see Mindy if interested.

In April of 2011, the Mn. Legislature created an amendment to the Mn. Constitution banning same-sex marriage. This amendment will be on the ballot for a state-wide vote in the Nov. 2012 election. It is important to understand the affects this vote will have on the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-trans) community, as well as our future citizens.
On Tuesday. March 6, from 6-8 pm. at the Stillwater Public Library (224 N. Third St.), St. Cloud motivational speaker Denny Smith will present a seminar discussing this amendment from all sides thru understanding, compassion, and education. Please join us in a lively discussion on Tuesday. March 6th.
A seminar entitled "Making Stillwater Welcoming to All People: Opening Our Doors to the LGBT Community" is designed to foster calm and meaningful discussion on a very volatile and controversial issue. People on all sides of the debate are encouraged to attend.
Denny Smith, author of God Did TOO Make Adam & Steve and father of a gay son, will conduct the session, designed to promote equality, respect and dignity for LGBT people, their families and their relationships. Smith, a former teacher and coach, is a motivational speaker and president of Dennis Smith Training and Development in St. Cloud.
There are currently seven states that allow gay marriage: Conn., New Hampshire, Mass., New York, Iowa, Vermont, and Wash. state. Calif. is working on it.
More information is available at www.wmenow.org.

Saving a Life
The life you save with CPR is very likely a loved one, a child, spouse, parent or friend. Four out of five cardiac arrests occur at home. Effective and immediate CPR can double or triple the chance of a heart attack victim's survival.
Ascension parishioner Frank Langer will offer CPR and AED instruction for Ascension parishioners on Saturday, March 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall. To prevent the risk of disease transmission, CPR is now "hands-only", that is, compressions to the chest, with no mouth-to-mouth contact. There is a sign up sheet for this in the parish hall.

Anna Julia Haywood Cooper 1964
Anna Julia Haywood Cooper (August 10, c1859- February 27, 1964). Educator, advocate and scholar. Born in Raleigh, North Carolina to an enslaved woman and a white man, presumably her mother's master, Anna Julia was an academically gifted child and received a scholarship to attend St. Augustine Normal School and Collegiate Institute, a school founded by the Episcopal Church to educate African-American teachers and clergy. There she began her membership in the Episcopal Church. After forcing her way into a Greek class designed for male theology students, Anna Julia later married the instructor, George A.C. Cooper, the second African-American ordained to the Episcopal priesthood in North Carolina. After her husband's death in 1879, Cooper received degrees in mathematics from Oberlin College, and was made principal of the only African American high school in Washington D.C.. She was denied reappointment in 1906 because she refused to lower her educational standards.
