Episcopal Church of the Ascension 2012 Mission Trip Kick-Off Meeting Monday, February 6, 7:00 p.m. Parish Hall
Want to join a team of youth and adults on an adventure of service and love? We have found a long-standing, safe, excellent program that serves orphans and single mothers in Guatemala. The director, Patrick Atkinson, is a family friend of Ascension members Bob and Mattie Rupp, and he touched the hearts of all who heard him speak at Ascension in early December.
Each year scores of volunteers serve the thousands of children that depend on the God's Child Project for food, shelter, and education by building and repairing facilities, playing with and tutoring children, offering medical care, and more. Patrick and his staff will work with us to tailor a service project to the abilities of our group.
**** Scholarships are available. *****

Come Feb. 6th and find out how you can join the team!

Jean Becker and Jozine Biessner, long-time Ascension friends, take time for a hug at her recent birthday celebration. Jozine and Jean served in the parish kitchen and helped with the youth choir for many years, and the Biessner home was across from the library at the corner of North 4th Street and Mulberry Streets. Parish Nurse Andrea Johnson, Rector Buff, and Jean made the trip to see Jozine in her current home in Eagan.

At our Annual Convention in October 2011, the Episcopal Church of MN passed a resolution that said we oppose the proposed amendment to the Constitution banning same-sex marriage. At the time, Bishop Brian Prior told StarTrib reporters: "The Episcopal Church in Minnesota has always stood with the marginalized. Regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, gender orientation or immigrant status, Episcopalians in Minnesota have always embraced both the Gospel mandate of love of neighbor and the Baptismal Covenant imperative to respect the dignity of every human being."
If you would like to learn more about this issue, please watch our Enews for upcoming speakers and discussion gatherings.
On March 6, 2012, 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Denny Smith will speak at the Stillwater Library. Denny is not a professional speaker, but a father, basketball coach, and catholic who wrestled with this issue as one of his three children realized he was gay. Denny has told his story in the StarTribune and been featured in follow-up columns, and is an informal conversational speaker who many enjoy.
** If you would like to support the Episcopal Church's work in this issue, you can join Buff+ on February 23 in a phone banking effort with other Episcopalians from around the metro area. **

Fanny Crosby (Frances Jane Van Alstyne Crosby)
Hymnwriter, 1915
Frances Jane Crosby (March 24 1820 - February 12 1915) usually known as Fanny Crosby, was an American lyricist best known for her Protestant Christian hymns. A lifelong Methodist, she was one of the most prolific hymnists in history, writing over 8,000 despite being blind since infancy. Also known for her preaching and speaking, during her lifetime Fanny Crosby was one of the best known women in the United States. To this day, the vast majority of American hymnals contain her work [but not the 1982 Episcopal Church Hymnal]. Some of her best known songs include "Blessed Assurance", "Jesus Is Tenderly Calling You Home", "Praise Him, Praise Him", and "To God Be the Glory". Because some publishers were hesitant to have so many hymns by one person in their hymnals, Crosby used nearly 100 different pseudonyms during her career.
