                       Why The Font?

                             From the Rector

A big thank you to Lynn Raarup, Chris Tardiff, and Dan Gerber
who have worked diligently to create this new version of our E-news!

Episcopalians are often noted (or faulted) for using an esoteric word where a simple one will suffice.  Paten instead of plate, chalice instead of cup, narthex instead of
that-place-you-get-a-bulletin-and-talk-to-people-before-the-service.
Ascension excels in this quirk of ours, and I may be the worst, having named our first e-newsletter "Ascension Attentions," a tongue twister if there ever was one.  Still, we are not just renaming our newsletter The Font to make it easier to say.  Much more, we are honoring our life in flood, flame and blood.

poinsentiaValley Outreach Needs our Help

Dear Ascension friends, over the holidays there is a high demand on our Stillwater Area Food shelf. I would like to request that members bring food items to church to donate to the food shelf for the next couple weeks. You can leave them in the back of church and I'll bring them in.

We can expand our community service by having a twofold approach. 1st, those who are able to sign up to staff the food shelf and 2nd, donating food items so more people can be involved in our commitment to assist the food shelf.

Thank you for any contribution you provide, either time or a donation.

We Need Volunteers on:

Monday January 9, Wednesday, January 11 and Friday, January 13 .

Join us Sunday, January 22nd after the 10 a.m. Eucharist for a tasty lunch and guest speakers from Minnesota Churches Refugee Services (MCC).  Episcopal Migration Ministries partners with MCC to serve some of the hundreds who come to Minnesota each year from homelands ravaged by war and oppression. Hear amazing stories and learn how these volunteers help people daily rebuild their lives. Our Community Kitchen will serve up a delicious lunch.  There is no charge for the meal or event.

elizabeth seton
Elizabeth Seton
Founder Of The American Sisters Of Charity, 1821
Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton (August 28, 1774 - January 4, 1821) was the first native-born citizen of the United States to be canonized in the Roman Catholic Church, on September 14, 1975.

Seton was born on August 28, 1774 to Richard Bayley of New York City. She was raised in the Episcopal Church. Her mother, daughter of an Episcopal priest, died when Elizabeth was three. At the age of nineteen, she married William Magee Seton, a wealthy businessman. Five children were born to the marriage.

Her husband's business lost several ships at sea and the family ended up bankrupt. Soon after, her husband became ill and his doctors sent him to Italy for the warmer climate, with Elizabeth Seton accompanying him. In Italy, they were held in quarantine, during which time her husband died. She spent time with a wealthy family where she was exposed to Catholicism. Two years later she converted to Roman Catholicism, on March 14, 1805 and was received into the Church by the first bishop of Baltimore, John Carroll.
