We hope everyone had a happy 4th of July holiday!
Summer is in full swing and the hot temperatures leave everyone and everything parched. Some of our southern suburbs have had a bit of rain and very damaging thunderstorms, but here in the far northwestern 'burbs, we've hardly had a drop. So keep watering those trees and shrubs. Give them a good thorough soaking twice a week until we get some relief from the heat and drought, then continue to water once a week until the ground freezes in late fall. Garden Accents
Narrow upright conifers make outstanding garden accents, and can also be used for hedging or screening. Some have exceptionally narrow profiles, some are wider columns, and others have some width at the base. There are graceful or quirky weeping forms. Whether you're going for a formal or more relaxed look, you'll find just the right conifer at Rich's Foxwillow Pines.
Design an elegant space reminiscent of an Italian garden with Thuja occidentalis 'Degroot's Spire' or Juniperus chinensis 'Trautman' in place of Italian cypress (Cupressus sempervirens), a tree not hardy in our area. 'Degroot's Spire' is a slow-growing columnar arborvitae with dark green foliage. It will tolerate some shade. The blue-green 'Trautman' juniper will thrive in full sun locations.
Punctuate a garden with a pencil-point yew like Taxus x media 'Maureen', 'Pilaris' or 'Bean Pole'. Yews grow best with 6-8 hours of sun, but won't tolerate extremely hot dry conditions.

Add a dash of whimsy to a sunny location with Picea omorika 'Pendula Bruns'. This Serbian spruce develops bends and curves as the top grows, and the pendulous branches hang close to the trunk, creating a unique narrow profile. Show a flair for drama with Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'Green Arrow'. This cultivar of Nootka False Cypress, also known as Alaskan Cypress, is one of the narrower forms, with graceful weeping branches. Abies concolor 'Blue Cloak', an upright pyramidal fir with pendulous branches, adds a touch of powder blue color and interesting needle texture.
