Greetings!
With fall in full swing, Rich's Foxwillow Pines Nursery is preparing for winter. We will be covering our hoop houses in late November, so if you're still needing a few conifers in pots, come out early this month. This is also a great time to tag trees for next spring.
Please note that our hours change in mid-November --- see the sidebar on the left.
Happy Thanksgiving from Rich, Susan & Margaret Eyre!
Sciadopitys verticillata - Japanese Umbrella Pine
Sciadopitys verticillata is an exotic-looking conifer with thick soft needles. The species originates from Japan, and is commonly called Japanese Umbrella Pine, though it is not a true pine. It is the only member of its genus. The fossil record shows that the genus was more widespread in past eras and dates back to the age of dinosaurs.
Sciadopitys verticillata 'Joe Kozey'
Sciadopitys verticillata will thrive in full sun to partial shade, with at least 6 hours of sun. The tree needs a location with good drainage and should be kept moist. It does best in a sheltered area where it is protected from winter sun and harsh winds.
There are several cultivars in the trade, and most have the long needles of the species. The whorled needle arrangement has an umbrella-like look. 'Joe Kozey' is a narrow upright form that grows about 5 feet every 10 years. 'Mitsch Select' is a dense slow-growing form (3ft/10yrs) with short needles, becoming a broad pyramid as it ages.
