Greetings!
Fall is in full swing with our weather ranging from crisp bright days to blustery windy ones. This is a good time to plant trees and shrubs, or to tag something for next spring. Keep watering your new trees until the ground freezes. Don't be surprised if you see needle drop on pine trees - the oldest interior needles turn brown and drop off. Other conifers also drop needles, but this is most dramatic in pines.

Ginkgo biloba - Maidenhair Tree
 | Ginkgo biloba 'Pendula' espaliered - fall color |
Ginkgos come from an ancient lineage of trees, and the extinct Ginkgo yimaensis was around when the dinosaurs first emerged. Ginkgo biloba is native to eastern Asia, and has been under cultivation in China for hundreds of years. Ginkgos are incredibly long-lived trees and some enormous specimens in China are estimated to be 1500 years old.
Numerous cultivars have been selected for size and shape and for leaf variations. We have close to 60 different cultivars in our inventory. 'Jade Butterfly' is a dwarf form that is vase-shaped. 'Princeton Sentry' has a narrow shape, great as a vertical accent in the garden. 'Tubiformis' has leaves that are folded inward, and 'Thelma' has several kinds of leaves: strap-like, tube-like, and the usual fan-shaped. 'Mariken' is one of the slowest-growing ginkgos (2' in 10 years) and has a rounded shape. 'Weeping Wonder' is a prostrate witches' broom selection found by Rich Eyre and Mike DIrkson in Springfield IL. Ginkgo biloba 'Kew' is a large cultivar that originates from a 250 year old specimen in London's Kew Gardens.

Because the leaves resemble those of the maidenhair fern, Ginkgo biloba is commonly called the Maidenhair Tree. The unique fan-shaped leaves turn a gorgeous yellow color in the fall. Then after a night when temperatures drop to just the right degree, the leaves drop and form a golden carpet on the ground.

Ginkgo biloba is a dioecious plant, with separate male and female trees. The female trees produce seed pods with a soft outer coating that is quite smelly. Ginkgo cultivars in the horticultural trade are developed from male clones and do not produce this foul smelling seed. Ginkgos thrive in full sun conditions and are tolerant of tough conditions. Many towns have planted them as street trees.
