Everyday Gold Medals
We are the champions in our own lives

"We do not have to become heroes overnight. Just a step at a time, meeting each thing that comes up ... discovering we have the strength to stare it down
."
-- Eleanor Roosevelt

I'm one of those people who loves the Olympics. I'm hardly a sports fanatic (I've had my moments over the years but mostly don't care too much) but it's all that human drama that gets me!

Grateful Olympic AthleteIn between all the men's razor blade commercials and the decathalon trials you will find all you could ever hope for in the saga of the human spirit. Who can resist the story of the young girl from (fill in country of choice here) whose parents sacrificed so she could train for (fill in sport here) with the best coach? And the inspirational tale of the team from (fill in country of choice here) that was devastated by a (fill in tragic accident here) 10 years ago but refused to give up?

I know, I know! I'm already crying!

I think a large part of the appeal of such events is the opportunity to watch someone persevere and succeed in their dreams, even despite impossible odds. We often find hope for our own lives in these athletes' stories.

Each of us, however, is an Olympian of some sort.

You have your own well of commitment, strength and talent from which you draw every day.  While we underestimate it's importance, showing up for life is by far one of the most courageous activities we undertake.

I realize NBC isn't lurking around your house to film you making lunch for the kids before working a double shift, showing up to your mat for meditation after two hours of sleep or care-taking your loved one with Alzheimer's when they don't even know who you are anymore. I know there is no committee making arrangements for your medal ceremony.

Most of all I realize that you don't consider these tasks particularly heroic or remarkable...but that's kind of why they are.

Looking to others for inspiration is a natural and appropriate human tendency. But why not take a little time to find ways to be inspired by facets of your own admirable character? I can guarantee you deserve a medal for going the distance.
