Soul Food: Your RDA*
Your spirit is tired of yo-yo dieting

"Discipline isn't doing it perfectly every day. It's doing it every day.
"
-- Rachel Loeb, yoga instructor and musician

Last year I was in a teacher training with a woman who was unfamiliar with sadhana, which is a daily spiritual practice and an essential component of Kundalini yoga. She was curious as to how this ritual might benefit her.

There are many types of sadhana but I explained the common practice of Aquarian Morning Sadhana, which begins daily at 4 a.m. and is often undertaken in 40-day cycles. As I got to know this woman, who I now consider a friend and fellow yogi, I learned that she is a devout Catholic who prays and goes for a pre-dawn walk on a daily basis.

Rosary Beads"Well, you already have a sadhana," I said excitedly. She looked a little surprised but it was true. For decades she has devoted herself to these daily tasks that ground her in her physical form and connect her to her higher self. And it works marvelously for her. I told her she could, of course, do Aquarian sadhana in addition to her routine and that would be fabulous -- but it would simply be icing on the cake.

What is important here is not that my friend do Aquarian sadhana (although it would be great) or that she prays a rosary. The point is that she has a regular, devotional habit that feeds her from the inside out.

Every single human on this planet needs that.

I don't care what you call it or what language you do it in or if it's something I understand. Just get something going consistently that helps you experience both your stability and limitlessness. Without it, the stress upon you is too much for your body and mind to manage.

Ask yourself the following questions:

1) What uplifts me?

2) What grounds me?

3) Am I doing that every day?

If the answer to question No. 3 is "yes," then keep going. If the answer is "no," ask yourself question No. 4:

What the hell am I waiting for?

Artist at WorkSeriously, what's the hold up? Are you needing approval? Are you putting it off until everyone else's needs are met? Are you waiting for a "better time" to start? Until you know exactly what you should be doing? How you should be doing it?

Not gonna happen. Not. Gonna. Happen.

I know it's scary. I know you may get push-back and criticism. I know there are a million other things you need to be doing with your time. I know. I get it because that's the stuff that threatens to interfere with my own daily practice. The challenge is to override the negative message (or person) that could block you and get on with it anyway.

It isn't easy to maintain that commitment but it is worth it. So go ahead and take the time to feed your soul. It's very, very hungry. RDA
