Never Say "Never"
But maybe say "someday"

"Every change is yoga.
"
-- Desikachar

I was laughing with my teacher last week about how many things I said I could never imagine that are now a consistent part of my life...like yoga. (I never thought I could "do" yoga and so I never tried it.)

I was also certain I could never meditate. And many years ago I decided I did not want to live in Los Angeles. Ha!
SusieQ
Look at that sweet face! The picture of this rescued calf pushed me another step closer to becoming vegetarian.

I didn't think I could ever give up meat to become a vegetarian and, yet. I appear to be well on my way. (SusieQ, pictured at right at The Gentle Barn animal shelter, no longer looks like dinner to me.)

I thought there was no way I could teach yoga or make it through teacher training. Wrong.

I was especially confident that I would never do 40 days of sadhana in a row, particularly at 4 a.m. I used to come home at 4 a.m. when the bars closed. These people (my Kundalini yoga teachers) who were talking about choosing to awaken at 3:30 a.m. to prepare for two and half hours of yoga and meditation...well, they were all nice people but, quite obviously, insane. Guess what? Now I'm a big fan of sadhana.

I figured I couldn't go to the annual 3HO Summer Solstice Celebration because I hate camping and cold showers. This June will mark my fourth trip to summer solstice.

Based on the evidence, it would appear that I have vastly underestimated myself.

When I look at my list, which is by no means comprehensive, I think about the fear and doubt I have now regarding the challenges that face me. Many things in front of me at the moment seem completely impossible. But what if I'm wrong? I mean, judging from my past behavior, I probably am.
What's on your list of things you told yourself were impossible? Have any of them happened despite your skepticism? Sometimes things that are impossible at one time become possible at another time. Just because something isn't happening now does not mean it will never happen.

A consistent yoga practice can be the basis for observing -- and perhaps even initiating -- such changes. Each time you come to the mat,  you are a different person than you were the day before. A pose that was out of reach on Monday may feel effortless on Friday. With patience and commitment, you may surprise yourself by doing what you used to think impossible, both on and off the mat.
