Life As a Merit-Based Event
"Deserve" has nothing to do with it

"Reputation is an idle and most false imposition; oft got without merit, and lost without deserving.
"

-- William Shakespeare

I've been enjoying a run of good fortune recently. Opportunities for teaching, service, and growth are raining down on me from every corner. It's fantastic, let me tell you!

Michael PhelpsThese happy times have inspired congratulations and well-wishes from loved ones who are overjoyed for me. Among the pleasant sentiments coming my way are comments that all this awesomeness couldn't be happening to a nicer gal. Aw, shucks, y'all! Thanks! I'm touched you think so!

But I would be remiss if, in the face of this praise, I failed to remember a critical insight learned from experience:

Life is NOT a merit-based event.

How many times in my life have I "deserved" something and been passed over? Conversely, how many times have I been thrown against a wall having done nothing to "deserve" such punishment?

On a daily basis, we watch the innocent (especially our children) suffer cruelly and needlessly. When is the last time a child "deserved" to eat or to starve? To be hugged or beaten? To be adopted or abandoned?

Long ago I was forced to give up the notion that good things happen to good people. I mean, they do. But as far as I can tell, the reasons are fairly random. Good things happen to assholes, too.
And that right there, well, that messes with our desire for fairness and our (incredibly false and arrogant) sense of control.

Most people want to believe that if we are good little boys and girls, our ship will come in. We'll get a gold star. The room will give us a standing ovation when we enter. We also want to believe that Little Miss Snotty Pants over there will be shunned by society for her backstabbing ways. Or that the Bully will fall into a mud puddle as he runs out of the schoolyard. It's no coincidence that our lust for comeuppance can be illustrated in terms usually reserved for Kindergarten dynamics. These notions amount to a type of spiritual immaturity that keeps many of us in an endless loop of expectation and disappointment.

When we are seduced by the notion that good fortune is something we deserve, then what conclusion must we draw when the inevitable hardships occur? In my case, I decided that misfortune was proof of my failure and worthlessness, a nasty little set-up that was a disaster in the making. These days, for the sake of my own sanity, I do not kid myself that I have "earned" the abundance and blessings presently flowing in my life.

Thanks to my yoga practice and other beneficial influences, I have now freed myself from reward-and-punishment thinking and, as a result, I feel a lot more peaceful. I feel grateful for my good fortune and I intend to capitalize on this upswing -- but as much as possible I will refrain from taking personally the so-called "good" and so-called "bad" circumstances. Instead, I'll continue to take one step forward at a time, humbly trusting that I, like you, deserve everything and nothing at all.
Sat Nam,
Mary
