Edition 13

November 2011

Dear Readers,

As we come to a close in 2011, we want to wish all of our Nephrology Note readers a wonderful holiday season. We appreciate you taking the time to read our newsletter and providing feedback. At DaVita, one of our Core Values is Continuous Improvement so let us know how we can improve the Nephrology Note. We will continue with addressing issues that the Dialysis community faces, share our patient and teammate stories, as well as highlight why nephrology nursing is a rewarding field to be in.

We look forward to seeing you in 2012!

Assessing the Adequacy of Dialysis

Part 3:  Achieving and Maintaining Adequacy
As discussed in parts 1 and 2 of the Assessing the Adequacy of Dialysis article, urea kinetic modeling or Kt/V has become the most widely accepted means of assessing the adequacy of dialysis treatments. To achieve and maintain adequacy, K (clearance) and t (time) can be manipulated in both, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Factors related to each are described below. (For a more indepth look at dialysis treatment choices, click here.)

Finally Home for the Holidays by Larry K., Social Worker

What better time than the holidays to go the extra mile.
This past December, we welcomed a guest patient who came to our Hallwood Facility in Michigan.  We'd been expecting Terry and knew he'd be with us for about a week during his visit from Texas. I wasted no time getting to know him during my daily rounds, teasing him about leaving warm Texas for wintering Michigan.  One day, I asked what brought him up north at that time of year.  His answer to me was both  suprising and concerning. My American Dream Fulfilled by Rose D., RN

Working as a dialysis nurse has become more of a passion than a job.

Looking back over my 16 years as a nurse, I think I found my passion several years after graduating from nursing school.  It was in 1998 that I was first introduced to hemodialysis.  Since then, working as a dialysis nurse has become more of a passion than a job.

In 2002, I left the Phillippines with a bunch of other nurses - including Hans, who later became my other half - to work in the United Kingdom as a dialysis nurse. Living and working in England gave me the chance to meet new friends who became my family away from home. Though life was good in the UK, I had this deep-seated longing to move to the United States. I know that working as a nurse in the U.S. would open doors to a wide array of possibilities.
