Student Coordinates Event to Educate the Community Nash Community College Early Childhood Education student Calvenia Moore of Rocky Mount recently coordinated Sickle Cell Awareness Day during National Sickle Cell Awareness month. For five years, she has coordinated the event which is free to the community and educates locals about the disease. "I am a carrier of sickle cell disease which is called Sickle Cell Trait and I also have a child with this disease. I didn't know anything about this disease until I had my child. I personally didn't want others to learn about this disease the same way I did, so I decided to find a way to educate the community about this disease." Sickle cell anemia is a disease passed down through families in which red blood cells form an abnormal crescent shape. The disease is caused by an abnormal type of hemoglobin called hemoglobin S. Hemoglobin is a protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen and can cause periodic episodes of pain. Hemoglobin S changes the shape of red blood cells, especially when the cells are exposed to low oxygen levels. The red blood cells become shaped like crescents or sickles. "Part of Nash Community College's Early Childhood Education curriculum is to teach students to be advocates for children. Calvenia Moore supports the local community and its members through her advocacy of sickle cell awareness," NCC Early Childhood Education Instructor Sarah Prezioso said.
Moore plans to graduate from Nash Community College in the spring. Upon graduation, she hopes to work as a teaching assistant in a pre-K classroom.
