Nash Community College hosted two diversity month speakers last week from its sister college, Moneague College, in St. Ann, Jamaica. Howard R. Isaacs, the College's President along with Instructor Tricia Rob-Brown, spoke to NCC students, faculty, staff and members of the community about slavery and its socio-cultural impact on North Carolina and the Caribbean.
"North Carolina along with the British Caribbean grew up as European colonies. There was an economical intertwining between the two societies," Isaacs shared. He spoke of the role family, language, religion and music play in the lasting impact on these cultures.
Isaacs explained the primary similarity between the Carolinas and the Caribbean was that they were both key players in the Atlantic Slave Trade. Slavery in both areas had divergent and convergent structures. The socio-cultural impact of slavery has left a lasting legacy in the Caribbean and Carolinas.
"Slaves in the Caribbean and elsewhere approached the experience of bondage with a determination to assert their humanity and cultural identities," he said. "Throughout the discussion we have tried to paint a picture of a system that had and continues to have a significant impact upon our featured societies. You would have noted that not much was mentioned on the horrors of this debasing and cruel system. In the two territories, we have seen the ingenuity of slaves and their ancestors to adapt to a system by blending and creating varying art forms."
Nash Community College and Moneague College entered into an educational partnership several years ago when NCC instructors visited Moneague during an educational exchange focused on the culinary and hotel and restaurant management programs. The two colleges continue to exchange ideas and look forward to partnering in other academic areas.
