Students Begin New Semester

Over 3,000 Nash Community College students will begin spring semester classes next week.

"With the state of the economy, students are looking for programs that result in jobs," Vice President for Instruction Deborah Griffiths said. "That says a lot about our instruction and the programs we offer."

Nash Community College programs seeing the most growth are: Automotive Systems Technology (up 200%), Computer Engineering Technology (up 36%), Information Systems Technology (up 29%), Criminal Justice - Latent Evidence Concentration (up 27%), Culinary (up 23%), Early Childhood (up 22%) and Medical Office Administration (up 15%).*

As the campus grows, the college continually seeks new ways to meet student needs. As of this semester, students can purchase books online and have them delivered to their home or they may reserve books for pick-up on campus. Future plans include selling college apparel and school supplies online. Twelve percent of students purchased their books through the new NCC online bookstore.

Other services including online registration through WebAdvisor are gaining in popularity. Over 43 percent of spring semester students registered online. The college offers 149 courses online.

NCC continues to increase its overall quality and effectiveness through the development of a first-year experience program to help students transition into the demands and expectations of college and empower them to achieve greater success. The program's implementation was based on campus and community-wide input.

"The increase in services being offered both online and on campus over the last few years is an example of how we rise to meet our students' needs and ultimately help them achieve their educational goals," Griffiths said.

* Data represents enrollment increase from 2008-09 to 2009-10 academic year.
