Greetings!
Hope this newsletter finds you and your family in good health! There's a couple really great specials for you this month. The first is a fabulous Mother's Day special you can find at the bottom of this newsletter. I'm also offering a back scrub and mud mask special for those who would like to try out that service and you can find details of that special in the article 'Glowing Skin for the Summer'.

Have you noticed body scrubs and mud wraps are on my menu, but you aren't sure what that is exactly? No worries! I've explained the benefits of exfoliating and using mud on the skin, as well as how the process works in my office. There is some fascinating research out on green mud (which is the type I use) and that it kills many forms of bacteria, including MRSA! You can read an article on the study HERE.

There's a new business in my building; Tea Gallerie is owned by Maria Alto and if you enjoy tea, you'll really enjoy her hand-created natural tea blends. The various teas consist of the skillful blending of green, rooibos, jasmine, dried fruits, chocolate, etc. They also carry tea pots, cups and other tea related products. In fact, we are joining together to have a open house on May 13, so save the date on your calender! There's going to be lots of goodies!

Warmly,
Rajam Roose, HHP

Glowing Skin for the Summer

How body wraps improve skin health

bodywrap

Mud wraps and scrubs can be wonderful for improving skin health and the process involved is very relaxing in itself. Summer is fast approaching and besides good nutritional health and drinking plenty of water, having a body wrap is another way to have glowing healthy skin. On my menu you will find that I offer partial and full body exfoliation as well as mud wraps. Mud wraps include full body exfoliation and your choice of a scalp or foot massage.

The skin continuously produces new skin cells which travel from the lower layer (the dermis) to the upper layer (the epidermis). The new skin cells gradually die as they rise to the surface. As we age, this process slows and older cells become clogged on the skin's surface, creating a dull appearance. This is why exfoliation is so good for the skin and why it helps the skin to look fresh. Body exfoliation, or scrubs, help remove dead skin cells, clear dry patches, impurities and sebum thereby speeding cell renewal. Body scrubs also help prepare the skin for moisturizers or other skin treatments, such as a mud wrap.

The mud blend used in my office consists of various herbs blended with French Green Clay (also known as Illite or Sea Clay). Green clay has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties which makes it beneficial for muscular pain, swelling and arthritic or rheumatic conditions. Cosmetically, green clay is known for its ability to stimulate blood and lymph circulation, remove dead skin cells, and gives the skin a toned appearance. Green clay contains many valuable elements, including: magnesium, calcium, potassium, silica, copper and manganese.

It is recommended to exfoliate the body once a week and the mud wrap is beneficial once a month.  To begin, we start face down and the legs, arms and back are scrubbed with a warmed scrub which consists of a blend of herbs and powdered apricot shell. Using hot towels, the scrub is wiped off the skin and then you will be turned over for exfoliation to the front of the body. After wiping the scrub, you will be asked to sit up (with a towel around you for privacy!) and I will pull away the towel from underneath you to reveal the wrap material. I will then apply the warmed mud to your back and have you lay back onto the table.  The warmed mud will be applied to the rest of your body before wrapping you in a cocoon of blankets. During the process where the mud's healing properties are absorbed into the skin, you have the choice of receiving either a 15 minute scalp or foot massage. After which, I unwrap each portion of the body and wipe off the mud with warm towels. The session is completed with a full body application of organic lotion.

Many clients find the hot towels to be very relaxing and soothing. The entire process is cozy and warm and the results are immediate. You will definitely notice a difference in how your skin feels after wiping off the scrub. The scrub and mud are very easily removed with the hot towels and no shower is necessary.  The scrub and mud are very lightly scented from the natural herbs, but I can add aromatherapy if you'd like. The variety of aromatherapy blends and the ingredients of the wonderful scrub and mud that I use can be found on my Spa Services page HERE.

McKenzie "D" Lumbar Roll

   lumbar roll

This lumbar roll is great to take with you on the plane or use in the car. Lumbar support can help support the natural curve in your lower back when you are sitting for any length of time. I use one both in my car and when I fly. I have cut the straps off to make it easier to carry around with me. Sitting on a plane used to lead to upper back pain, but not anymore!

Here's a little exercise you can do to better understand how a lumbar support can be helpful; if you're sitting down go ahead and stand back up. (If you're already standing, disregard that part!) Sit with both feet flat on the floor and straight, so your back isn't resting on the back of the chair. Now, imagine your pelvis (a ring created by your two hip bones as the sides) is a bowl filled with water. Slowly and gently tip the "bowl" forward as if you are going to spill some water in front of you. At the same time you may notice that it feels like your spine is lifting a little.

Play around with this movement. Most of us sit with our tailbones tucked in a little, as though our "bowls" are spilling just a little water out the back of our spine. As this happens, your upper back is slumped forward somewhat. When you use a lumbar support, this helps your "bowl" tip forward a little, and you will notice that your upper back doesn't slump forward.

The lumbar support does this for your spine so you don't have to think about sitting in a ram-rod straight position, which isn't good for the body either. Really, the most important and useful thing to help prevent low back pain is movement. If you need a reminder about sitting ergonomics, check out my article from THIS newsletter to review.  The lumbar roll should be placed just above your hipbones.

Your car or desk chair may already come with a lumbar support. However, those usually aren't helpful because they are created with a generic model in mind. We all have such differences in our heights, widths and pelvic lengths that those generic seat additions can't be depended on to provide any good support.
