Greetings!
Hope this newsletter finds you and your family in good health! We've been enjoying some interesting weather; our yard sure is enjoying the rain. March is here and we are looking forward to the annual profusion of California poppies that carpet our yard every spring. March is the first month of spring and this is a great time to begin new activities, such as an exercise program, outdoor gardening or walking with friends. The days are getting longer and the sun is rising earlier in the morning; if you're an early bird (like me) you probably appreciate that there's light for an early morning walk.

It can be difficult starting a new business from scratch and I've been so very fortunate to have developed a great clientele in such a short time. I really appreciate your support and it is my goal to continue to provide the top-notch service you deserve in helping to maintain your health and wellness. I've finally put up online scheduling to make it easier for you to schedule and even pay for your appointments.

A few months ago I watched a 50 minute long film that discusses studies performed by a Stanford neuroscience researcher about stress and its effects upon the body. The video is a fantastic wake up call about how important it is for our health that we learn ways to transform our stress. This is very simple to do, it just takes a little planning and only twenty minutes a day! The benefits far outweigh the risks, especially when you think of the cost of health care. What better time to get to work on a stress management plan than the springtime!

Just to let you know, the office will be closed late afternoon on March 17 and will re-open on April 4, 2011. If you would like to schedule an appointment before the office is closed, please call 619-964-5821 or visit www.RajamRoose.com to schedule your appointment.

Warmly,
Rajam Roose, HHP

Introducing Online Scheduling!

It's all about helping make your life less stressful, and that includes making it easier to schedule your bodywork and massage appointments. No more playing email or phone tag! I'm very excited about this new program..

Go to www.RajamRoose.com and click on the tab found at the top of the page 'Book Your Appointment'. Once on the main appointment scheduling page, you have two formats you can use to find an appointment. You can either use the general appointment finder or if you want to view the calender in week format go to the top right and click on the 'Browse Appointment Schedule'. All green and gray areas are unavailable. The available times will be in a yellow or tan box with the word 'appointment'.

You'll notice there are four tabs near the top right of the appointment setting page. Here are their basic descriptions:

'My Info' - here's where you can sign in to schedule your appointment, purchase an appointment or view your appointment history.

'Online Store' - clicking on this tab will enable you to either purchase your appointment or purchase a gift certificate. You can choose from a pre-selected assortment of designs as well and write in the "from", "to" and any other type of information you would like to include. The gift certificates can be printed out at your computer or emailed to the recipient.

Finally, there is a 'Help' tab in case you have any questions.

If you have any questions that can't be answered in the 'Help' section, please don't hesitate to contact me. I have the scheduling system set to where it adds an extra 30 minutes to each appointment. This is to ensure there will be a 30 minute break between clients. For example, if you schedule a one hour session, you might notice that your confirmation email states you are coming in for a one hour massage, but will list a hour and a half time period. For example, if your one hour appointment is at 3pm,  your confirmation email will state- "This is to confirm your one hour massage from 3pm until 4:30 pm."

* The following only applies if you're using the calender view of the appointment schedule:

The only downside to tacking on that extra 30 minutes is that if you peruse the appointment schedule in the weekly view and see that I have only one hour appointment time available on a particular day, you will not be able to schedule a one hour session. You would only be able to schedule a 30 minute session instead.

However, this is very easy for me to adjust. If you find there is a time slot open but the system doesn't let you schedule, please call me and leave a message informing me of the date and time you want. I will immediately schedule that time for you when I get your phone message and will let you know A.S.A.P. that your time has been scheduled.

National Geographic: Stress: Portrait of a Killer(DVD)

stress dvd cover

A few months ago I viewed a wonderful film that expertly explains the effects stress has upon our daily lives and how it can destroy health. For instance, did you know that stress can actually kill brain cells?

I highly recommend this film for anyone who is serious about taking control of the stress in their lives. Even if you don't feel like stress is affecting your health, you may be surprised at the latest science that shows how harmful stress can be. This film is only about fifty minutes long and well worth your time.

This film can be purchased at a low cost on Amazon, you can click HERE . If you have Netflex, this film can be downloaded instantly and watched on your computer.

Seven Tips for Effective Stress Management

Stress is not an abstract concept, nor is it something that maybe you should do something about-- you need to attend to it today because stress can damage your health. Of all the things that can lead to health problems, stress management is one that we have definite control. Besides getting regular bodywork and massage, there are many ways to alleviate stress and add years of health to your life!

However, stress management is not something you save up for on the weekend, it's something you must set time for and do on a daily basis. Although the following list of things have been shown to reduce stress, they aren't useful if used every so often, it must become a daily practice.

Here are seven activities that have been scientifically shown to help manage stress.

Exercise

Modify your home or work environment to cut down on the things that are creating stress.

Meditation

4

Performing activities you really enjoy

Time Management - don't become a slave to your lists, but use them to help prioritize goals and tasks. Many community colleges offer courses on time management and there are a plethora of books to choose on that topic at the bookstore.

Thoughtful Reflection

Understand the difference between the things you can control in your life and those things which you have no control.

One caveat, when choosing which activities from this list to create your stress management plan, it must be something you enjoy. For example, if you've tried meditating and it just stresses you out-- then don't do it. Choose something else!

To start with your stress management plan all you need is a calender and color pencils or highlighter pens. It may be easier to start with just one or two days out of the week, but your goal should be to eventually do something every day of the week. Choose an activity from this list and using your color pencil or highlighter- mark out the times for the activity you have chosen to combat stress. It need not take more than just twenty minutes a day. The important thing is that eventually, you should do one activity daily in order to have the desired effect upon your health and well being.

The famous psychologist, Viktor Frankl was the sole member of his family to survive the Nazi death camps. Frankl wrote:

"We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms----to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way."
