Windows 8 is Here!

 Windows 8 Logo

It's official. Windows 8 is ready for sale, "released to manufacturing" or RTM, as the industry terms it.  It's new and different...but in many ways familiar.

You can run regular programs on the Windows desktop and new, Windows 8-style programs (from the Microsoft App Store) in tiles on the main screen.

The Windows 8 look and feel will appear on tablets and Windows smartphones to provide a single interface across devices.  Windows 8 will start showing up on new devices over the next several months.

Windows 7 PCs purchased between June 2, 2012, and January 31, 2013, can download Windows 8 Professional for a special promotional price of $14.99.  See www.windowsupgradeoffer.com for details.

Windows 7 will still be available preloaded on new business computers.  Remember support for Windows XP will officially end in April 2013.

Windows 7 Tip: Click, Hold, and Shake to Minimize Windows

Running multiple programs can clutter your desktop with windows, but minimizing them in earlier versions of Windows was annoyingly slow because each had to be minimized separately.

Windows 7 solves the problem with its "shake" feature, which allows you to minimize all windows except the one you're in simultaneously and quickly.

Just click and hold the title bar of the window you want to keep, and move your mouse rapidly to "shake" the window back and forth. This causes other windows to minimize and park on the taskbar.

Windwos 7 Shake

To reverse the process, click and hold the title bar and shake the window again. Pressing the window key and home key at the same time also returns all windows to full screen.

A Bit of Humor . . . .

I was visiting my son last night when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper. 'This is the 21st century,' he said. 'we young people don't waste money on silly newspapers. Here, you can use my iPad, if you can figure it out.'

I can tell you this, that darn fly never knew what hit it... and, my son learned a thing or two about manners, as well.
