Apple or Windows for Online Purchases?  It Might Make a Difference!

People often ask which is better, Apple or Windows? We support both and know each platform has strengths and weaknesses.  Ultimately it's about making sure you get what fits your needs and wants.  Pick the right tool for the job, whether business or personal.

When making online purchases, however, you might want to go with Windows.  Why?  Because some websites are able to identify your system and might treat you differently depending on whether you're using a Mac or a Windows platform.

It was recently discovered, for instance, that leading online travel site Orbitz presents pricier hotels to Apple users, evidently based on research  that shows they are willing to spend up to 30% more per night on rooms than Windows users.

It's too soon to tell whether other online services will follow Orbitz' lead, but if it helps suppliers make more money they might be lining up already.

What to do?  If Orbitz is correct about you and your willingness to spend more, then book a reservation with your Mac.  If it is wrong and economy is a priority despite your use of a Mac, either plan on requesting lower-cost options or borrow a Windows computer and save money on your next trip.

Home Computers in the Office?

You probably take steps to protect your business computers including spending time and money ensuring you have the latest security updates and anti-virus software. Perhaps you've even signed up for one of our managed service programs and are allowing Tobin Solutions to handle this for you.

But what about home computers? They need to be protected as well but that is none of your business unless one is brought into your business.

If not properly protected, a home PC or laptop might put your network at risk.

For example, an employee of one of our customers innocently brought a personal laptop to work to help out.  Unfortunately it was infected by viruses; these sent out spam that caused the customer's email domain to be blacklisted. This meant email could not be sent for a full business day.

Establishing a written policy that specifies whether employees are allowed to bring computers to work and under what conditions will help you avoid problems.  If you decide to welcome home computers to your workplace, make sure employees are aware that they'll need the latest security updates and anti-virus software.
