Apples Are Not Immune Popular press stories sometimes portray Apple products as less susceptible to problems than other brands, but it's not true. We've been supporting Macs and other Apple products for years and know from experience they are subject to many of the same problems that affect Windows-based and other kinds of systems. All computers, including tablets, experience storage failures, hardware glitches, software installation issues, system crashes and freezes, and attacks by viruses, spyware, etc. Just last month, 700,000 Macs in locations around the world were infected by a malware program called Flashback that created a giant botnet that was used to commit fraud. The bottom line? No computer is safe. You need to back up data regularly, keep your system up to date with the latest security patches, and follow other safe computing practices. |
Can Business Data Leave The Building?
It's easy to transfer computer files and programs to a laptop, memory stick, or portable hard drive. You can even copy your entire server directly to an iPod, iPad, or a Smartphone. Often this is done so you and your employees can work from home.
But sometimes the reason is larcenous: stealing data.
What would you do if your customer list or financial information was left in the back of a taxi or stolen by a disgruntled employee? Who is responsible if a portable device disappears? Do you have a written policy that specifies who can use these devices and for what purposes?
The following steps will help reduce your risk:
1. Create a written policy (we have a sample to get you started);
2. Implement technology that restricts or prevents the use of certain
portable devices;
3. Use data encryption; and
4. Restrict business data to authorized users only.
Planning will help keep your business data safe and secure. |
