New Microsoft Office

Microsoft has released the Office 15 Technical Preview in private beta only.  Office 15 is the successor to Office 2010 (actually version 14) and will be out a few months after Windows 8 is available, probably by the end of 2012.

Office 15 has some of the look and feel of the new Windows 8 Metro interface, meaning it will work better on tablets and be more touch friendly.  It still features the Ribbon interface introduced with Office 2007, but there are subtle changes that make it crisper.  When the Ribbon is used on a tablet, for example, the icons, buttons, and other interface elements increase in size so they are easier to operate by touch.

Office 15 also works well with cloud-based file storage services such as Microsoft's SkyDrive, a major improvement over Office 2010.

We'll keep you posted as more details become available on Microsoft's flagship productivty suite.

Watch Out for Mobile Phone Data Plan Caps

The cloud is the future, but beware or you might incur big phone bills.  Downloading bandwidth hogs such as music, videos, books, magazines, newspapers, and applications can max out smaller data plans well before the month is up.

The trend among mobile phone carriers is to place limits on the amount of data users can send and receive with smartphones or 3g- or 4g-enabled tablets.  Check your contract to determine your monthly allotment and find out what happens if you exceed it.  Your usage might be restricted or you could incur overage charges.

The following will help you stay within your plan:

  • Periodically check the application that monitors your smartphone usage;
  • Use Wi-Fi whenever possible because it doesn't add to your total; and
  • Check individual application settings-some have options that require Wi-Fi access for certain content, helping you avoid accidentally watching data behemoths such as Gone with the Wind over the phone network.
Updating Rhett: "Frankly, my dear, your carrier won't give a damn if you complain about a massive phone bill."

TIP:  Two Monitors to Increase Productivity

Using two monitors is helpful--for a quick testimonial, ask anyone who does. You'll hear two are better than one because they expand the amount of information you can see at one time and permit quick comparisons between documents. Every Tobin employee has two, and you might benefit by doing the same for your employees.

First check your graphics card.  Does it have enough output ports to support multiple monitors?

Once you've added a second monitor, here's how to adjust settings:

  • For Windows Vista or 7, right click on the desktop and go to Personalize>Appearance and Personalization>Display Settings;
  • For Windows XP, right click on the desktop and select Properties, then the Settings tab;
  • A diagram will appear showing the monitors;
  • Drag each monitor window into a position that matches where it is on your desk;
  • Choose which monitor will be your main monitor; and
  • Click the other monitor and set the drop-down menu option to "Extend the desktop on this monitor."

You're all set.
