Our Leap Year Edition
Microsoft Windows 8 Preview

The next generation of Microsoft's flagship operating system is inching closer with this week's expected release of the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Consider this a beta version. The final version of Windows 8 is expected in the second half of 2012 - probably in time for the holidays.

Microsoft is changing the look and feel of Windows with a new interface called Metro, which includes the Windows Store where applications may be purchased. This is being done to make Windows more touch-screen friendly so expect Windows 8 to show up in a tablet format to compete with Apple's iPad and Android-based tablets.

Of course you will still be able to run Windows 8 on traditional desktops and laptops. And you'll have access to a familiar desktop and Windows Explorer to run your existing business applications. Hardware requirements are similar to those for Windows 7. Internet Explorer 10, also to be released, will be the default Web browser.

Windows 7 is the standard-bearer for now and will likely remain so until businesses thoroughly test Windows 8 in their environments with their applications.

MOBILE PHONES TIP:  Selecting the Right Mobile Phone and Plan

Cell phones have evolved tremendously over the past decade and now offer many capabilities. Consider the following five points when searching for a plan and phone combination that meets your needs:

 Mobile Phone

  1. Coverage
  2. Discounts
  3. Physical phone
  4. Compatibility
  5. Service plans

Coverage

Cell companies are similar in terms of quality and reliability but coverage varies. Review coverage maps to ensure a supplier has service where you'll need it. Check international maps if you'll be using your phone outside of the US.

Discounts

Members of some professional organizations and those employed by certain companies are eligible for discounts. Check to see if any apply.

Physical phone

Choose a phone that appeals to you in terms of size, weight, and design; touchscreen and keyboard feel; screen clarity; camera capabilities; and options such as GPS and MP3.

If you plan on using Exchange and Outlook, Tobin recommends a phone that utilizes built-in ActiveSync technology (Exchange support). Windows smartphones, iPhone, and most Android phones have ActiveSync.

Options, such as tethering, allow a phone to act as a modem and allow a laptop to connect to the internet. Some phones have WiFi Hotspot features which allow multiple devices to share internet access from the phone's connection.

Compatibility

If certain applications or services are critical to you, make sure they work with the plan and phone you are interested in. For example,do you need to view Flash content or employ other third-party applications?

Synchronizing mobile and desktop calendars is a common need, and many phones synchronize items easily. Some lower-end brands, however, need helper applications such as Google Calendar Sync.

Blackberry phone synchronization typically requires additional software and configuration by an IT specialist. However, some models are able to connect to Microsoft Outlook Web Access and do not require the additional setup.

Service plans

If you will be using your mobile phone for business purposes, including Internet communications and downloads, an unlimited data plan is probably your best option.

Caveat emptor

Be wary of seller promises of compatibility and ease of set-up. Often they are incorrect or over-simplify the setup process.
