Thieves Love Geo-Tags in Your Online Pictures

It's easy and fun to post photos from cell phones and digital cameras to social networking sites...and maybe a little dangerous. Dangerous?
Believe it or not, thieves can figure out where someone lives from personal photos. How? Geo-Tags.
Some digital devices can add geographical information to images using GPS technology. The latitude, longitude, and even elevation can be embedded in the picture's details. For you, geo-tags are handy because they help you sort and find photos based on where you snapped the original picture.
But by examining this same information in online photos, thieves or other snoops can target in on the embedded location. If images happen to show cool stuff like expensive holiday gifts, the bad guys even know how worthwhile a target you are.
How can you protect yourself? Ultimately you need to decide how big of a risk this is for you. And some social media websites automatically remove geo-tags. Many current digital devices have a camera settings option to turn off geo-tagging. If you've already taken the picture, there are several free programs to remove the tags before you upload them to the web.

What is the Cloud? - Part 1
We receive a lot of questions about "the cloud." What is the cloud? Should I be in the cloud? Is the cloud the future? Where is the cloud? Is the cloud safe? Unfortunately in today's world, the cloud is as much a marketing buzzword as it is a strict definition of a type of information technology.
Like the much maligned word "green" is now attached to thousands of products to imply environmental friendliness, the word "cloud" has now been attached to thousands of computer products because its fluffy goodness makes everything better. There are even technologies that bill themselves as "green cloud" solutions!
From Wikipedia, "Cloud computing is a marketing term for technologies that provide computation, software, data access, and storage services that do not require end-user knowledge of the physical location and configuration of the system that delivers the services."
To further complicate the discussion, there are more technical definitions of public clouds, private clouds, hybrid clouds, community clouds, utility computing, grid computing, software-as-a-service, infrastructure-as-a-service, and platform-as-a-service.
We use cloud-based services every day. Facebook, LinkedIn, Gmail, and YouTube are but a few examples. Other examples include lesser known solutions for customer contact and business management. There are even solutions that will take your file server and move it to the cloud. Is this your future? Is this right for you? Issues such as security, reliability, support, and cost should be on your radar.
When making any technology decision, it's important to understand your specific needs and the pros and cons of possible solutions so you can do what's right for your business. In Part 2 of What is the Cloud?, we'll dive a bit deeper to help you make choices based on the facts instead of marketing hype. |

Thailand Flooding Impacts IT Product Availability Devastating floods during this year's Thai monsoon season have severely limited the nation's ability to manufacture goods, including some computer-related products. One example of a company feeling the impact is Seagate, a major producer of hard drives. It sent out a notice in November that states its December output is expected to fall short by an estimated 30% due to a significant drop in availability of "externally sourced components." This flows up to computer manufacturers like Dell and HP who put these hard drives in every single desktop, laptop and server. And it is causing wide-spread price increases for hard drives and PCs, out-of-stock situations, and longer delivery times. Please plan ahead and place your equipment orders with as much lead time as possible. |
WORD TIP: Status Bar Statistics and Locations
Do you need to find specific places in a document? Do you collaborate with others on documents and struggle to be in the same place at the same time during a conference? Understanding the Status Bar along the bottom of the Word window can help you find an exact location and access other useful information.
Word 2010 (default view)

Tools are displayed on the right side of the Status Bar; the left side shows the number of pages and words.
Individual line, word, and section information may be viewed by customizing the bar. To do so, right click in a blank space on the Status Bar, and check the tools you want to display in the Customize Status Bar window. (Word 2010 has new choices relating to number of authors, uploads, and updates.)

2007 (customized)

Labels show information about the page on the screen and the location of the cursor. Examples:
Section: A simple document has one section, regardless of pages. When special page breaks, column breaks, etc. are added, the number of sections increases. Placement of the cursor determines the section number that displays. (For example, Section: 2 of 3.)
At: The number of inches down from the top of the page, header included.
Line: Counts from the first to the last line on each page.
Column: Each character is in its own column and line. Pressing tab starts a new column, therefore a line with several tab stops will have more columns than a line with just text and spaces. Font size also influences the number of columns in a line.
Words: Total number in the document. Selecting a range of text displays how many words are highlighted plus the total in the document. Example: 55/222 (55 words selected of 222 in the document).
Depending on the choices you make when customizing the Status Bar, you will see other features. For example, Caps Lock displays when it is turned on. In the image below, Caps Lock would display between Track Changes and Insert.

Meet the Tobin Staff...
Jason Ley, Business Development Manager
Ask most golfers what their handicaps are and you'll hear things like "looking up," but Jason Ley, Tobin Solutions' new Business Development Manager, says, "9.7," which means he's an experienced player and capable of shooting in the 70s.
Jason received his BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has worked in sales for about a decade. He comes to Tobin from a job selling maintenance solutions to companies with overhead cranes.
The products and services he represents have varied but what makes him successful is his commitment to customer satisfaction. He's a fast learner, prides himself on uncovering and meeting customer needs, and is devoted to developing long-term relationships by providing exceptional service.
A lifelong Wisconsinite, Jason currently lives in Waukesha. He enjoys following the NFL and other major league sports and also competes in several basketball leagues during the winter months.
Meeting a golfer able to break 80 is unusual but encountering someone who describes himself as a "sneakerhead" is even rarer. One of Jason's hobbies is collecting classic Nikes such as the Air Jordan 11 white and black with patent leather toes and sides. He says it will be re-released later this month.
When it comes to the links, Jason recommends keeping it on the short grass; when it comes to IT, he's a strong advocate for Tobin Solutions. |
Just a Bit of Humor... Murphy's Laws of Computing!
~ For every action, there is an equal and opposite malfunction.
~ To err is human...to blame your computer for your mistakes is even more human; in fact it is downright natural.
