New Internet Address System
When all possible telephone numbers in an area code are used, new area codes are created. In Southeastern Wisconsin, 262 debuted in 1999 for this reason, leaving 414 for Milwaukee County alone.
Zip codes too were increased from five to nine digits nationwide to accommodate increasing numbers of addresses.
Well, the same thing is happening with Internet addresses. Known as IP addresses (IP stands for Internet Protocol), the 4.2-billion-number system created in the 1980s was thought to be more than enough, but no one foresaw the dramatically expanded need for IP addresses caused by cell phones, printers, and other computer equipment.
The last batch of the original IP addresses was assigned in February 2011, and a new sequence, called IPv6, is already being implemented. The IPv6 sequence will permit 340 undecillion addresses. An undecillion is a one followed by 36 zeros; by contrast, a billion is a one followed by nine zeros.
IPv6 is more complex than IP, has built-in security mechanisms and other new features, and uses a different language. Additional technology is needed to allow the two systems to work together.

Its Storm Season...Again!
With all of the wicked weather, floods and fires that have hit the U.S. we felt it was time again to remind everyone to be prepared for weather events and other natural disasters.
- Do you have your critical equipments on
surge suppressors in case of lightning strikes or power surges?
- Are your UPS's working in case of power failure?
- Are you backing up all of your data?
- Are your computers out of harm's way if the water rises?
Check your emergency preparedness plan to see if all is in order. (We know you have one because we told you last year to create one.)

WORD TIP: Insert Return Addresses Automatically When printing envelopes (including ones that print with a Word document), a return address can be inserted automatically by adding a default address to the user's Word options. In Word 2010 or 2007: 1. Click the File (2010) or Office Button (2007) menu; 2. Open Word Options; 3. Select Advanced; 4. Scroll to the General section; and 5. Enter address information in the Mailing Address box.
In Word 2003: 1. Select the Tools> Options> User information tab; and 2. Enter the address in the Mailing Address box.
When an envelope is printed using the Mailings or Mail Merge function, the default address will populate the return address box, and print in the return address area of the envelope.
When stationary with a pre-printed return address is used, the automatic return address can be suppressed by checking Omit before clicking the Print button. |
