Are Your Precious Memories Safe and Secure?

Photos of family members and friends are irreplaceable moments in time.  Sadly, many people come to regret not taking better care of these precious memories.  All too often they can be seen on newscasts after fires, floods, and other disasters wishing they could have saved their photos.

The popularity of digital cameras means many photos are stored electronically today.  In many ways, digital images are easier to protect than prints and slides.  Here are some basics:

- Learn how to move photos off your camera or phone to a more secure location

- Make sure you have needed cables and transfer equipment readily available

- Know the kind of storage media (DX, etc.) your camera uses and have extra storage cards on hand

-Include photos stored on your computer in whatever backup system you use

For greatest protection, follow these additional best practices:

-Routinely create backups of images and store them in a different building from where the originals are stored

-Periodically verify backups are working correctly

Making sure your precious memories are preserved requires commitment and some effort on your part, but if the unexpected happens, you'll be glad you took the time.

EXCEL TIP: Cursor Behavior

After pressing Enter in a spreadsheet, have you ever had the cursor go to a different column than you expected, leading you to type in the wrong cell?

Understanding where the cursor goes after the Enter key is pressed will minimize the potential for this irritation.

Here's what you need to know: When you place the cursor in a cell and click, the column the cell is in becomes home base. Pressing the Tab key moves the cursor through the columns to the right of home base. Pressing Enter returns the cursor to the home base column.

For example, in the image below, the cursor is placed in cell A2 and clicked. The tab key is then used to move the cursor to the right to enter data in cells B2, C2, and so on.  After the phone number is entered in cell G2, Enter is pressed to move the cursor to the home base column's cell A3 for the next record.

Later, John Doe's record was started but then the entry person realized Kathy Smith's phone number hadn't been recorded. The cursor was then placed in cell G3 and clicked, allowing the phone number to be typed in.

The entry person then pressed Enter, but the curser moved straight down to cell G4 not back and down to A4 as expected.  This happened because clicking in cell G3 moved home base out of column A to column G. To correct this, it is necessary to click in cell A4 to return home base to column A.  Now the tab key can be used to move to B4, C4, and so on.
