The Phoenix Landing Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit all-volunteer organization. It was established to promote and protect the welfare of parrots through adoption, education, and refuge. Almost every bird, from the smallest to the largest, from the most loved to the most neglected, will need a new home someday. Probably several new homes. People's lives change, often unexpectedly. One day your bird may need a good new home too. Please consider adoption first!

ADOPTABLE BIRDS
Here are a few of our many birds looking for their new homes
|
This edition of our newsletter will focus on Lovebirds. This type of parrot is native to Africa. They are bright and colorful, and make a unique chirping noise which some people enjoy. Lovebirds are one of the smaller parrots, so they can be a bit easier to care for; however, we always recommend the largest cage possible! These birds enjoy a diet of healthy grains, fruits, veggies, legumes and edible flowers, supplemented by a small pellet and limited seed. Lovebirds often bond closely with each other, which might mean you should not expect to have a significant hands-on relationship. It's not necessary to have lots of touching for us to have companionship with birds, sometimes appreciating their beauty and antics is all we need to enjoy our time together.
|

LENNY and SQUIGGY These lovebirds are brothers and have always been together. They are about a year and a half old. Their diet was all parakeet seed and their cage was too small. Their foster home is showing them a variety of fresh veggies and fruits, some seeds and Harrison's small pellets. They now enjoy a bigger cage with some room to fly and new toys to pique their curiosity and encourage foraging. They have been given a few days of outdoor sunshine and fresh air. Lenny and Squiggy are even starting to enjoy a spritz of water.
|
FRANKIE has the personality of a guardian of the castle! He is the first to come to the front of the cage, the first to taste new foods and the first to step onto a hand for a sunflower seed (a treat they love but is used primarily just for training). Frankie is the perfect compliment to Annette and Gilligan. Lovebirds are all very delightful to listen too when they chirp happily. As with all birds, these lovebirds will need families that will give them time to build trust. |
ANNETTE is a beautiful lemon chiffon color with blue under feathers. She is housed with Gilligan and Frankie. She will stay in the rear if you approach the cage but will over rule the other two when she wants her way. She plays the role of Queen of the castle very well. |
GILLIAN is a 1 year old lovebird, and she Is sharing a cage with Frankie and Annette. She is enjoying being with friends, especially now that they are in a larger cage where they can fly or find privacy if they need it. A cage can NEVER be large enough, especially if there is an odd number of birds. When small cages are used, birds may feel like they have to fight for some territory, which is understandable. We recommend a MINIMUM 32x21 cage for lovebirds in this kind of configuration, but larger is even better! |
Peach faced lovebirds HUEY and DEWEY are approximately 7 years old. Huey and Dewey are a pair. They are entertaining to watch, not too loud, undemanding and beautiful. They are learning to eat vegetables and yummy grains. They are gentle and comfortable having dogs, cats and rabbits around. |
With hundreds of birds in foster, or waiting for our help, we will work with you and your family to make the best match for everyone. For more information about our foster and adoption program, or to find our application, go to phoenixlanding.org/adoption

GINA ROBINSON, DVM: The Avian Exam September 8th - Springfield, VA
Our birds need to see a doctor upon occasion, just like we do, and it's very important that they see a veterinarian that specializes in avian medicine! Join us for a class with Dr. Gina Robinson. She is going to walk us through all the important things that she looks for during a well bird exam. She will also tell us about the important information that can be garnered from lab work. Birds are prey animals and they do their best to look healthy, even if they are not. This helps them avoid predators in the wild. So in captivity, we may think they are well when they are actually ill. Doing bloodwork upon occasion can help us stay ahead of major problems! Dr. Robinson is from the VCA Highlands Animal Clinic in Abingdon, VA. She has a wonderful way with birds and sees the parrots of Phoenix Landing from that area, for which we are most grateful!
