The Phoenix Landing Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit all-volunteer organization. It was established to promote and protect the welfare of parrots through adoption, education, and refuge. Almost every bird, from the smallest to the largest, from the most loved to the most neglected, will need a new home someday. Probably several new homes.  People's lives change, often unexpectedly. One day your bird may need a good new home too.  Please consider adoption first!

ADOPTABLE BIRDS

Here are a few of our many birds looking for their new homes

BYRDIE is a sweet little 5 year old female cockatiel, She craves her fill of daily millet. We are trying to expand her nutritional horizons by introducing soaked grains such as kamut, mung bean sprouts, and TOPS Napoleon mix.  Her favorite hangout and sleeping spot is her shelf, where she can exercise her feet and enjoy her millet spray.  Until she trusts you, her shelf provides a great "transport system."  She would love an opportunity to share her life with another female cockatiel!

JOHNNIE is a 17 year old female quaker.  She has a wide array of wild bird sounds, you'll wonder who is doing the tweeting because it sounds like she's invited all her outdoor bird friends inside for a play date. She loves to give kisses, and if you approach her with respect and patience, she might even snuggle up to your cheek and purr.  Johnnie also loves her little shelf and plays on it a lot. Her favorite sleeping spot is a little birdie hut, she turns out her own lights and just a bit of tail hangs out the back.

BAXTER is a young black headed Caique.  He is missing one wing and has a turned in toe, but none of that detracts from his Caique nature. Within the first hours with us, he was beak down trying every possible legume, grain, veggie, fruit and protein we offered.   He is high energy, as is the Caique way, so you'd better be prepared with lots of ideas for exercise and mental enrichment. And guess what, he also loves the shelf we gave him!

MOJITO is a 5 year old Indian ringneck.  Her long-term foster has done an amazing job of training her to target, turn around in both directions, scratch her head, etc.   She was once a very anxious bird that lunged at everyone around her.  She has learned calmness and play, and is considerably more trusting (if you respect her space and use positive techniques).  She is very intent on tearing up paper or anything that can be shredded like paper bags for foraging or rolling machine tape.

RUSTY is a 12 year old blue and gold macaw.  She is a fast learner, and would adore having a home with people interested in trick training.   She is stick trained, so it's easy to pick her up that way and include her in family activities.  She eats Harrison's pellets and nuts, and is still learning to enjoy some of those important fresh foods.  She will need a new cage (48 wide minimum).

With hundreds of birds in foster, or waiting for our help, we will work with you and your family to make the best match for everyone.  For more information about our foster and adoption program, or to find our application, go to phoenixlanding.org/adoption
NYLA COPP: Aviaries and Play Areas
May 5th; Springfield, VA
Nyla Copp has spent over 25 years in the trades working genres as varied as construction & handiwork, theatrical productions, cabinetry, custom furniture and building mechanics. She turned her attention and skills to companion birds when a critically ill lovebird found its way into her stewardship. Under excellent avian veterinary care, Orlando as she became known, survived. For a strong recovery and continued good health, the veterinary directive was outdoor time. Nyla immediately set to work. Materials, resources and design proved more challenging than expected. With guidance from companion bird vets, behaviorists and experienced avian caretakers, the backyard aviary was, at last, completed and with it, a new career had begun. Since 2008, she has specialized in enriched habitats for healthy, recovering and special needs birds. Safe, high quality outdoor environments are her passion and specialty! Avian medicine is finding time outdoors, not only beneficial but, necessary for the health of our companion birds. For more information, go to: phoenixlanding.org/events

FERN VAN SANT, DVM
Heart Disease and Prevention - MOVE IT!
May 19th: Jessup, MD
As birds exist primarily as flighted animals, it is a wonder that we have generally adapted our approach to companion parrots as sedentary animals. Whether this approach is based on convenience or laziness, there is no doubt that it affects the sustainable health in our companion parrots. Evidence that our birds are suffering from degenerative conditions due primarily to high fat diets and lack of exercise has become more and more evident, and a significant number of parrots suffer from heart disease such as artheriosclerosis. Dr. Van Sant will discuss ways we can get our birds moving and living closer to the ways their bodies were meant to live. This is a very important event! KARRIE NOTERMAN: Aviaries and Play Areas
MAY 19th: Asheville, NC
Karrie Noterman is the co-owner of Natural Inspirations Parrot Cages. After spending time with wild parrots in many parts of the world, and as a trainer for bird shows, she has come to greatly appreciate the need for birds to have plenty of space for exercise, enrichment and social activities. Unfortunately, many birds in captivity live in woefully small cages, and lead lives far from the ways of their wild counterparts. Karrie really enjoys teaching people about how to build aviaries, which she believes can really expand their quality-of-life. She will cover several aspects of aviaries including construction, safety, and materials. Let's talk about how to give your bird some outdoor fun and get them moving! For more information, go to phoenixlanding.org/events

JENNY DRUMMEY: Biting Matters!
MAY 19th: Fairfax, VA
There are several sure-fire ways to get bitten (e.g. poke your finger into your bird's cage; chase the bird with your hand or a treat; force your bird to step up; or ignore your parrot's body language). These are some of the time-honored techniques which can result in the best bites of your life, so why not learn how to avoid them altogether? Bites are painful, frustrating, dangerous and unnecessary. This class by Jenny Drummey, in combination with her book called Biting Matters, will help us learn ways to reduce or eliminate this trust-destroying behavior, and how to live happily (and bite free!) with your bird. GREENHOUSE and ORCHARD

Look at this wonderful new resource! Thanks once again to Richard Rossi for this significant donation, which will provide us with many months of fresh veggies for the birds at The Landing adoption center.  Whatever is not eaten straight from the garden will be chopped and frozen for later use. We've already harvested quite a bit of kale, spinach and other greens; and a wide assortment of other veggies are on the horizon. In addition, thanks to Penny Coghe, Kathy Koscan and Laura Ford for the fruit trees and berry bushes. We now have a budding orchard of pear, peach, apple, blueberry and gooseberry.   For more photos, go to  phoenixlanding.org/blog.  We'll try to provide updates throughout the year as things grow and are harvested. We are MOST grateful to our parrot-loving sponsors for these wonderful additions to The Landing campus.
