The Phoenix Landing Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit all-volunteer organization. It was established to promote and protect the welfare of parrots through adoption, education, and refuge. Almost every bird, from the smallest to the largest, from the most loved to the most neglected, will need a new home someday. Probably several new homes. People's lives change, often unexpectedly. One day your bird may need a good new home too. Please consider adoption first! |

ADOPTABLE BIRDS
Here are a few of our many birds looking for their new homes
|
PHOENIX is a female Alexandrine Ringneck, age unknown. She loves to take spray baths and enjoys her mashes and fresh foods. Her favorite toys are all shiny and she would do just about anything to get her beak on something blue. She has a very sweet and active personality, and truly loves to be part of the family. |
MURPHY is an approximately 12 year old female blue and gold macaw. She had minimal handling and human interaction for the first 10 years of her life but is really starting to enjoy being handled and interacting with humans. She absolutely loves "stepping up" on a perching stick and is beginning to trust people enough to step up on an arm as well. Murphy likes to toss balls and other toys to you so that you can catch them and toss them back. She enjoys her Harrison's coarse pellets, almonds and walnuts in the shell. She really enjoys being out of her cage on a Java tree and loves the challenge of learning new things so a home that can provide this type of lifestyle and interaction would be ideal. Like all big macaws, she can have a very loud voice at times but is generally quiet unless she hears another macaw vocalizing.

COCKATIELS We always have many cute cockatiels for adoption, and often they are already in a group or pair. Cockatiels are especially flock oriented and truly appreciate having a buddy to keep them company. To prevent breeding, you can keep groups of males or females. Like cockatoos, their genetic relations, cockatiels appreciate a regular schedule, with up to 12 hours of sleep each day, just as they would have in the wild. This can prevent excessive egg-laying and other problems. Cockatiels also appreciate fresh greens and grains. Try giving them a small container of wheat grass (with organic soil) set in a food bowl, they will enjoy foraging and clipping small bites. Or grains such as kamut, which you can feed dry, soaked, sprouted or undercooked (about 30 minutes). Other healthy grains for small birds include millet, oat groats, buckwheat, flax and sesame seeds. |
JERRY is a six year old green cheek conure, sex unknown. He came from a loving home, but a change in work schedule meant that Jerrry's family could no longer give him the time he deserved (the most common reason birds are relinquished to us). He is on a pelleted diet, and enjoys fresh food like celery leaves, broccoli and pears. His foster family have helped with 5 parrots in the past, and say that Jerry is the best behaved one yet. But any bird can learn to bite. Caregivers much watch body language, understand personal space and have realistic expectations. Jerry loves bells and mirrors and sleeping in his fleece tent, and loves time spent out of his cage. |
With hundreds of birds in foster, or waiting for our help, we will work with you and your family to make the best match for everyone. For more information about our foster and adoption program, or to find our application, go to phoenixlanding.org/adoption

COMMON AVIAN EMERGENCIES with SCOTT STAHL, DVM
February 4th: Springfield, VA
This lecture will focus on common pet bird emergencies. Dr. Stahl will recap what we discussed last year and then we will have time to finish his most helpful presentation. It will be an advanced lecture to help owners understand how veterinarians approach these critical cases. Clinical presentation, diagnostic testing and treatment for these bird emergencies will be discussed in detail. Having a better understanding of these emergency conditions help us to identify problems sooner and determine whether they can deal with a crisis at home or if they need veterinary assistance. RECENT BLOG POSTS OF INTEREST
Last month we had great fun making Chop! with Patricia Sund. Chop! is a very healthy array of fresh foods that can be made in advance and then used to feed every size and species of parrot. To learn more click here. You might also like to check out the post about dried fruit on clips - an easy enrichment idea ( click here). Lastly, there is an enlightening 2011 study about the longevity of parrots in captivity. While several larger birds, especially cockatoos and macaws, often live over 50 years, many other species currently have a lower than expected lifespan. However, with ever increasing improvements in diet and overall care, we can probably expect these ages to rise in the future. To read more, go to: phoenixlanding.org/blog
