117 Waiting for Our Help

With hundreds of birds in foster, or waiting for our help, we will work with you and your family to make the best match for everyone.

To meet some of our many adoptable birds, join us at our events. For more information about our foster and adoption program, go to:

GOLDIE is a bright yellow ringneck that came to us from an animal shelter. She is a lively and curious bird. Goldie loves her seed but is gradually being shifted to pellets and fresh veggies. She has begun to investigate toys and has a very unusual, sweet call, especially in the evening. She is a wonderful, beautiful bird!

The Phoenix Landing Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit all-volunteer organization. It was established to promote and protect the welfare of parrots through adoption, education, and refuge. Beauty comes with age, and parrots live a long time. Even the smallest parakeet can live many years. Please consider adoption first!
ADOPTABLE BIRDS
Here are a few of our many birds looking for their new homes.
DILLY is a very talkative and fun girl. She loves lots of time on top of her cage or on a playstand, and the busier you can keep her, the better. She loves to play ball and other games. She needs and deserves to feel like a member of the family. She LOVES to chew wood, so get the saw and drill ready.
MABLE is about 15 years old. She doesn't say *human* words, but if you pay attention to all of her grunts, pops, knocks, growls, peeps and jeeps you will be able to tell when she is happy, excited, saying "I love you" etc. She is on a great diet and adores sweet potato mash. Mable showers gladly and in several different ways (the shower, the rain, a mister). She is a bit nervous, as many greys can be, so a calm home is recommended, probably without young children.
PIP SQUEAK & SWEET PEA are sun and nanday conures, respectively. Affectionately known as Green Chicken and Baldy, they are greatly bonded to one another. Pip's body is featherless, but Pea keeps him warm. They do everything together. They both eat well, and love to chew up their toys. They are not too noisy for conures - they seem content with each other.
LILY is a doll! She is a very social and engaged 18 year old blue and gold macaw. Her trainer at the last Step-Up workshop quickly taught her to turn around and wave. She is easy to pick up, and wants to stay involved in the activities around her. Unfortunately, she clips her back flight feathers, but we're teaching her to forage and play, and hope she'll forget about overpreening.

HAMPTON is a peach faced lovebird. She and her cage mate, a black masked lovie named ISHY, are so adorable. Hampton is outgoing and really enjoys the opportunity to fly around for a good cardiovascular workout. Ishy is shy, and usually hides when you approach. But when they snuggle up together as only lovebirds can do, they are so adorable!
SONNY and LOUIE are sun and jenday conures, respectively. They are a great, fun team! Sonny is flighted and enjoys going from room to room to follow you. Sonny likes dancing to music, especially when you dance along too. Louie is very attached to Sonny, although he is a bit less trusting of humans. However, after a few weeks of getting to know someone, Louie will follow Sonny into having fun with the family. Sonny and Louie eat very well and love birdie bread, sprouts, and nuts. Sonny and Louie are best friends and should be adopted together.
BARBARA HEIDENREICH, OCT 2, Fairfax, VA
At this event, parrot enthusiasts will learn basic methods and tools to teach their birds using positive reinforcement. The workshop includes a lecture, PowerPoint presentation, video, interactive activities, games, written materials and live demonstrations on how to train behaviors from start to finish. Barbara's goal is to provide an educational and fun experience. An open forum is encouraged to analyze all companion parrot behavior challenges. No prior registration required. T

DR. IRENE PEPPERBERG, OCT 16th, Asheville, NC
Dr. Pepperberg will share with us some of her favorite stories about Alex the African grey. Toward the end of his life, Alex spontaneously demonstrated an understanding of extremely complex concepts. These stories are guaranteed to inspire anyone who respects the lives of animals. We will have opportunities to discuss with her what it was like to share her life with a beloved icon and where the research goes from here as Griffin comes to the forefront.

We will also have an AUCTION in order to support Dr. Pepperberg’s ongoing research. If you have items to donate to support the auction, please e-mail us at phoenixlanding@earthlink.net. For more information about this event, go to: PhoenixLanding.org/events.
$20 donation at the door to support The Alex Foundation greatly appreciated.

Would you or your business like to sponsor coffee service at the Four Points Sheraton for this event?
Email us if you're interested.

A new book out by one of our favorite people, Professor Gerry W. Beyer, and his co-author Barry Seltzer. Available at our events or our on-line bookstore for $19.95. This book covers a range of options to provide for our pets' future under such circumstances when we are no longer mentally or physically able to take care of them. Also discussed are a number of related topics, such as pet retirement homes, pre-planning after-death arrangements for pets, and working around special problems associated with exotic pets.

OUR WISH LIST: Auction items for our upcoming events this fall with Irene Pepperperg, Barbara Heidenreich, Stewart Metz and Bonnie Zimmerman; frequent flyer miles for these special out-of-town fall guests; pickup and storage for donated cages in MD, NC and VA; and help to create and post event signs.

For the birds at The Landing: rolls of 36" butcher paper, a generator, untreated wood chunks with drilled holes, paulie rope or leather strips; new toys, nuts of all kinds, standing Ott lamps (found at craft stores), and Harrisons or TOPS pellets. Also on our wish list, Trex decking and Corners Limited aviary panels for an outdoor aviary. We'd like the birds to enjoy fresh air and sunshine while they are with us and awaiting their new families.

Don't forget to shop using our affliate programs (Amazon.com; BirdSafe Store; GoodSearch; Lakes Probiotics, Mountain Rose Herbs; etc). To find more ways to help parrots please visit: PhoenixLanding.org/Help

STEP-UP! November 12-14, 2010
November will be the last 2010 session for Step-Up, an intensive workshop designed to give people an abundance of information about parrot care from behavior and health, to nutrition and enrichment.
In addition to a diversity of lectures and discussions, there are hands-on training sessions, cooking sessions, a guest veterinarian to discuss health topics, and time to address issues of specific importance to you. We work with the current foster birds at the Landing, so you can teach behavior, foraging and feeding new foods first-hand, and learn to put those skills to practice with your own birds. Anyone with parakeets to macaws will benefit! Limited to 6 participants per session, only 1 space left for November.
To register, please go to: PhoenixLanding.org/StepUp
There will be three 2011 sessions (April, July and October)
