Cloud Computing for Tribal Organizations & Enterprises
Cloud Computing: Benefits and Security Concerns
Ram Patrachari--VP of IT--Viejas
Advanced technnologies and their quick adoption are disrupting the traditional business models. Tribes have to think strategically about how to prepare their organizations for the challenging and fast paced environment. Technology landscape has continued to evolve rapidly especially over the last few years.
The rapidly shifting technology environment creates serious challenges as well as opportunities for tribal and enterprise executives on how to capitalize on the monumental changes under way.
What is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing services are shared resources offered and maintained by a third party to multiple IT "tenants" or organziations. It is an evolution in which IT consumption and delivery are made available in a self-service fashion via the Internet or Intranet, with a flexible pay-as-you-go business model.

The Second Mouse Gets the Cheese Getting Better Return on Your Information
A mouse walks up to a piece of cheese. The cheese happens to be sitting inside a loaded mousetrap. The first mouse pays with his life. The second mouse comes around and eats the cheese. Here is the life-or-death question: Did the second mouse get the cheese simply because he was lucky, or did he use the information provided by his very dead pal to determine it was safe to eat the cheese? We will probably never know the answer. While most information will not yield life or death results, there is no doubt that better information generally leads to better outcomes for all parties.

Bitter Fight to Determine Who is an American Indian Turns to DNA Testing
Indian Country Today Media Network
The onset of casino gaming brought great change in Indian country, but it also created unexpected--and frequently heated--arguments over Indian identity: What makes somebody a member of a tribe, and how it is measured?
Traditional metrics include tracing lineage from flawed base-membership rolls and sometimes complicated math of blood quantum. Over the past decade, some tribes have turned to DNA testing to make sure tribal members, and potential enrollees, are who they say they are--at least when it comes to parentage.
This trend has come to just a small number of tribes, perhaps 40 or 50 out of the 265 with gaming, one consultant on tribal government estimates, and just a sliver of the Indian nations overall. But the joined issues of Indian identity and the sharing of lucrative casino profits have had an outsized impact. Through DNA tests or other methods, thousands of Indian people have found them themselves disenrolled in recent years for failing to meet tribal criteria.

Elouise Cobell Remembered
Indian Country Today Media Network
When news broke that Elouise Cobell, the embodiment of a16-year battle with the United States government for Indian funds, died, Sunday night [October 16], the outpouring of memories started to circulate.
Below are excerpts from some of the e-mails Indian Country Today Media Network received:
President Barack Obama
| | Evan Vucci, AP Photo |
"Michelle and I were saddened to hear about the passing of Elouise Cobell yesterday. Elouise spoke out when she saw that the Interior Department had failed to account for billions of dollars that they were supposed to collect on behalf of more than 300,000 of her fellow Native Americans. Because she did, I was able to sign into law a piece of legislation that finally provided a measure of justice to those who were affected. That law also creates a scholarship fund to give more Native Americans access to higher education, and give tribes more control over their own lands. Elouise helped to strengthen the government-to-government relationship with Indian Country, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family, and all those who mourn her passing."
Richard B. Williams, president and CEO of American Indian College Fund
"The American Indian College Fund was saddened to hear of the passing of Elouise Cobell. We believe she was a warrior that embodied the Indian value of decision-making that considered seven generations into the future."
