Sandy Lydon's Central Coast Secrets |
*To the Land of a Thousand Kindnesses: Our Hearts are Broken!
Since March 11, we have watched the Japanese people struggle, quietly, with the results from an unbelievably destructive earthquake and tsunami on their northeastern coast.
Fortunately, the Minamiboso, where most our Japanese friends live, was spared from the direct ravages of the quake and tsunami, and when we inquire of them how we can help, they respond by pointing northeast. "Help the people who need it," they implore us.
And we shall try. There are several local efforts in the Monterey Bay Region under way. The one I'm most familiar with is the Help Japan! a Fundraising Concert on the evening of April 23, at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz. I have been honored to be invited to be Master of Ceremonies, and from what I've seen and heard, it's going to be a wonderful evening.
Come join us!
Or you can enroll in our Abalone Fest, mentioned below.

Celebrating the Abalone Connection between the Monterey Bay and Japan!
One of the more unusual uses of abalone shells. Note the woman's confusion as she's holding a clam rake and wearing a fishing net, neither of which was used to capture abalone.
Sandy and Tim will explore the importance of and diverse uses of the abalone, including clothing (see above), and folk art.

Strange Bedfellows: That Watsonville-Santa Cruz "Thing"
Woe betide those who ignore the 150+ year rivalry between the Pajaro Valley and Santa Cruz! The lecture will illuminate the origins of the dispute and its periodic appearance throughout history. We will also explore successful "bridging" efforts between the warring factions.
You thought the San Andreas was the only fault you had to worry about?
Anyone doing business or involved in politics in Santa Cruz County must know about and take into account the rupture that occurs around 5300 Freedom Blvd.

A rare opportunity to explore the section of railroad built by Chinese laborers in 1880 which completed the Southern Pacific's take-over of the Monterey Peninsula.
Owned today by the Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), this section is no longer used, but the tracks are still in place.
The line crosses some fascinating slough country as well as the Salinas River.
We will explore both the history as well as the future plans that Monterey County has for this railroad right of way. We will have as our special resource person, Debbie Hale, Executive Director of the TAMC.
