Principal #2: Living Your Priorities
|
|
As
it's well into January, I imagine most of you have already made resolutions
and written goals for 2010. Life can always get better! But, I
wonder, how many of you updated your list of what
is most important to you now, over this upcoming year, and throughout this new decade?
Interestingly, most of us fail to identify our business and personal goals, taking us from where we are to where we want to be. It's like
pulling back the string of a bow, without first locating the target.
I
remember a startling moment in my own life when my good friend LeAnn Thieman,
speaker and co-author of Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul, challenged me, along with her audience of nurses, to draft a list of our priorities. Then, she asked us to create an additional list of how we
spent the majority of our time. After both exercises, LeAnn asked us: "How do the lists
align? Are you living your priorities? Are you spending most
of your time doing what is most important to you?" What an awakening! Thank
you LeAnn! Since then, I have found it crucial to consider first my
values, and then my goals.
Wherever you are with setting your goals for this new year, or decade, I suggest
finding a quiet moment to make two lists: a list of your
true priorities, your values, the values of your deep heart -- not
your best friend's, partner's or parent's, and your goals for the year and beyond.
Optimizing your future is not just
about "what's working for you or not working for you." It is clarifying what is most important to you and letting that information
be your guiding light as you set your sights on the future. For when you live
according to your priorities -- finding fulfillment in each moment becomes a
breeze, which fills your sails as you move through your life effortlessly WALKING TALL!
|
Walking Tall Tip:
Listen to your heart to hear what your priorities are!
If you need help getting clear on
your true values and priorities, take a time-out for 10 minutes or so. Sit in a
comfy chair, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Ask yourself,
"What's most important to me? What do I really value?" Bring your
attention to your heart and listen until
you get your answer. Repeat a few times, then implement. Because surely, your
heart is the compass of your life.

|
Walking Tall Exercise: -
Make a list of your top 10
priorities in life.
- Make a
list of the top 10 things you spend your time doing.
- Evaluate your lists.
Are your lists in alignment? Are you spending most of your time doing what is most important to you? If your priority list
resembles your task list, you're in good shape. If not, create some achievable goals that will help you live in balance with the priorities you've set for your life.
For example, if being a good dad/mom is high on your priority list, but you spend most of your time working, you need to look at ways to increase the amount of time or quality of your presence you give to your kids. Living according to our priorities and breaking
old habits is not easy. Let your family and friends know what is important to you and how they can help to keep you accountable! |
