AN EPIC DROUGHT, A PERFECT STORM

and IT'S RAINING PUPPIES!

SEPTEMBER 2011

Dear Friends,

As you all know, we are experiencing an epic drought.  Many of you may not even realize the effect it is having on the animal community.

Over the past several months Animal Angels has been called upon not only to continue to rescue dogs but also to rescue several equine.  It started with a call that three stray donkeys were about to be euthanized. A week later another call came thru that a paint mare, a mule and mini mule were at animal control and if they were not claimed at auction they would go to slaughter.  Although we are primarily a dog rescue we could not just sit back and let these beautiful babies be killed.  We also rescued a 31-year old Arabian whose owner passed away and was left with no one to care for him.  Ironically his name is "Puppy".   Two weeks ago we received a call from a man in East Texas who needed help.  Having lost his job and unable to find another, he needed to place his three beloved horses that he could no longer afford to feed, and his water was drying up.

As always Animal Angels has sprung into action to help these creatures be safe, fed and loved.  We already had the land, but needed to cross-fence for pastures, added run-in sheds for cover and had to start buying hay which is now triple the price from prior years, due to the drought.

Medical Update!
The sanctuary has been working on a project to have an on-site medical facility.  We have installed a surgery table, microscope, and most of the basics that we need.  This has allowed us to do spay/neuters and other surgeries and treatments on-site, as well as provide optimal care to our residents.  We still have a way to go to make it even better.  We need an autoclave, anesthesia machine and some dental equipment, along with some additional instruments and supplies.  Although considered "a work in progress" we have already started to drastically reduce our veterinarian bills, which was our largest single expense item. But not all good news, as we have had to start buying dog food, to feed our 300+ mostly larger breed dogs daily. This is an unwelcome and huge "FIRST" for Animal Angels. Most of the manufacturers have gone to better bags/packaging, so fewer donations have resulted.

Puppies, puppies everywhere!  We have rescued several whole litters of unwanted puppies, from "free to a good home" in front of stores, to being dumped outside our gate, and even more calls daily about "accidental" litters.

And the dogs we rescue from side of the road have needed much more care, and fluids to overcome dehydration and extreme heat. Folks are still dumping dogs "out in the country" and don't realize that this extreme weather has dried up almost every stock tank and creek where they might have been able to drink. Even one of our water wells was not able to keep up with our demand, because it was only drilled at 60 feet and the aquifers are at an all-time low. We put in another 1500gallon tank to ensure a good supply every day when we need it, as well as being critical to the constant threat of wildfires in our area.

Animal Angels tries to help all who call on us, and our gasoline/diesel bills have doubled this summer, because the reality of a dog being dumped in this heat will likely be a long and painful death sentence, imposed by thoughtless people.

WILDFIRE TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT THIS SUMMER

As you can see we have been working very hard to help everyone we possibly can; and now we are asking you to please help us be able to continue to fulfill our commitment to these wonderful creatures.  All of our residents get the best possible care and all the food and water they want.  They get to run and play with friends all day and crash out at our houses at night.  We are the oldest and largest no-kill, no-cage lifetime sanctuary in Texas. Animal Angels still relies on "resident volunteers" living on our property, and has no paid staff so every dollar that you give goes directly to animal care.  We receive nothing from the ASPCA, HSUS or any other organization, relying only on generous donations from our family of friends and supporters.

Please help us keep on helping innocent animals who are homeless and in need of basic life support!  We can't do what we do, without your help!

Sincerely,
