Greetings!
Welcome to Autumn - just when the trees are turning golden, along comes the wind and rain to hasten leaf-fall and remind us that winter is around the corner. We have another photo challenge for you this month so get outside and start capturing. There are some tips for silhouette photography below and a link to our competitions detail page in the right column - note our separate category for "pure" photographers this month. We look forward to your entries - the last challenge brightened up our Facebook page for March and we missed the colour in April. For those of you who do not use Facebook - this is NOT a Facebook competition - we just use Facebook to share photos as they are submitted.

Capturing Silhouettes
To capture a silhouette photo you want to underexpose your subject so it is very dark, or black, against a bright background. Use a tripod to keep the camera as steady as possible since you will be turning the flash off and/or using slow shutter speeds.
- Find an interesting shape for the silhouette
- if it's a person have them stand sideways so you can see the outline of their features
- frame carefully to avoid other shapes that may detract or crop tightly.
- Turn off your flash
- Ensure there's more light behind the subject than in front - sunrise and sunset are good times to try this
- Manually focus on the background if you have manual focus, or set to Landscape Mode if you only have autofocus
- Expose for the background - not the subject. Point the camera at the background, push the shutter half-way down to set the exposure, move the camera back to where you intended and push the shutter the rest of the way down.
- SLR owners can create silhouettes by under-exposing the photo.

New Cameras
We have a few new camera models trickling in this month
The Nikon Coolpix S9100 is a compact with a whopping 18x zoom lens (25~450mm equivalent) plus
· hi definition video recording (a full 1920x1080 pixels),
· "easy panorama" that captures a 180" or 360" panorama with one push of the button and rotation of the body
· "Pet Portrait" - when a dog or cat faces the camera, the camera detects the face, focuses on it and then releases the shutter, all automatically.
The Nikon Coolpix P500 is a bit chunkier with a36x zoom lens (22.5~810mm equivalent) - the highest optical zoom power in the history of the COOLPIX brand. This makes it perfect for capturing your kids on the sports' fields this winter. It too has Hi Definition video, easy panorama and pet portrait modes.

New Camera Accessory
The PODS are a very simple, high quality flexible bean bag with a built-in tripod mount. The pod will act like a tripod when set down or a stabiliser when braced against any handy surface.

They come in different colour/sizes for different types of cameras. The larger pods come with a strap to secure the camera. We currently have the two most popular models.
· The RED POD has a central mount and is designed for most compact cameras/camcorders and DSLRs with short lenses
· The GREEN POD (pictured) has an off-centre mount and suits DSLR with long zoom lenses.
