Photographic News

Greetings!

As expected this newsletter has a Christmas theme. One minute it seemed a long way off and suddenly it's only two weeks away!  I pity those staff working in stores that have been playing Christmas carols since the beginning of November!  We're getting into the Christmas spirit but our store will remain a Christmas carol-free zone! If you're stuck for gift ideas for others check out our "instant gifts" pictured below, and for you enthusiastic photographers we have a list of photographic gift ideas you can download to give to your parents, partners, etc.

At the bottom of this newsletter is a sample of our HP Rewards card - each time you use our blue kiosks you get a stamp. Three stamps before January 5th entitles you to a reward - view details on card sample.

Camera Tune-up

Here's an independent article on getting your camera gear ready for summer courtesy of the Photo Marketing Association and NYIP.
Of course your favourite camera store can help you with all the bits and pieces mentioned :-)

Calendar Project...completed !

Thanks to Sam Boswell who has been the master of this project - he has been dealing with all the entries, uploading them to Facebook and has selected the final photos. He has designed a template to add character to the calendar and it is now ready for printing. This is a low run calendar that wil be printed on our system as required - we will have copies on hand available for purchase to save you waiting. It is 12x12", has 28 pages and is on a heavy weight paper. Price is $39.99- we will donate $8 from each sale to Alzheimers Waikato.
A preview of each of the 12 photo pages can be viewed here and calendars ordered here...

All I want for Christmas is...

I've prepared a comprehensive list of gift suggestions for the photographer in the family. You can print this out,  maybe circle a few things, and leave it out where your partner/parents/children will see it and get the hint !
Good luck!

Instant Photo Gifts...

So you've left shopping for gifts for those hard-to-buy for people until the last minute! Chocolate won't last long but a gift made with a photo will be really appreciated. We have lots of last minute photo gifts from the greeting card incorporating your photo through to mousepads, glass coasters, thermal mugs, glass placemats, key-rings (standard, torch & bottle opener), photo pens, wooden blocks and acrylic blocks (all pictured).

Not pictured are the one-hour PhotoBooks, Photo Calendars and the traditional framed photo - although you could try a photo collage instead of a single image this year - its really easy with our software.

Photographing Christmas Lights

Here are some tips, courtesy of the PMA and NYIP:
  • Start at twilight -you'll capture some colour in the sky, rather than the pitch-black sky seen later at night.
  • Turn off your flash if you want to capture the lights themselves
  • Use "night portrait" (flash + slow shutter) if you want to capture your children in front of the lights
  • Use a fast ISO - try ISO 800.
  • The shutter speed will be slow so use a tripod...or brace the camera.
  • Automatic white balance can drain colour from the scene - experiment with other colour balance presets. Try tungsten first.
  • Shoot, check your LCD, then change settings if necessary.
Merry Christmas!

Don't forget between now and Christmas you can go in the draw to win a Kawasaki Mountain Bike - one entry for every $100 you spend - so we look forward to seeing you doing all your Christmas shopping in-store!
