Greetings!
How's the photo challenge coming along? The weather may not have been ideal last month but some saw it as a great opportunity to capture some creative pics featuring the river in flood. There's plenty of time so keep your camera with you and get snapping. If you missed reading about the challenge in the September Newsletter there's more info about the challenge further on. If you send lots of Christmas cards overseas each year you can get in early and take advantage of this month's coupon to print personalised cards using your photos on the card. Read on... |
TAKING PHOTOS WITHOUT TOUCHING THE CAMERA!
We stock a selection of accessories that allow you to be in the photo you capture, to take a photo without pressing the shutter to minimise camera shake, or to trigger the camera's shutter from a distance. In some situations you can just use the self-timer option on your camera. You will need to anticipate the moment to take the image 10 or so seconds before taking it (not ideal if subject matter is's moving or changing). Oherwise treat yourself to one of the following:
A cable release - one end of the cable plugs into the camera, and you hold the other end in your hand. There is a button on the part you hold that takes a photograph when you push it. The length of the cable determines how far you can be away from camera. Generic brands available in1, 3, & 5 metre lengths. Timer Shutter Releases - an advanced cable release that comes with features such as self-timer, exposure-count settings, interval timer, & long-exposure timers. An Infra-Red Remote Control - works exactly the same way a cable release does but without a cable - you can still activate the camera without actually touching it but will need to be facing the camera. Available for SLRs and some compact digital cameras. A Radio Controlled Remote - two pieces with one component attaching to the camera's "remote" terminal and the other a hand held firing device. These don't need line of sight between transmitter and receiver and may even work through walls. They work over large distances - some up to 100 metres. Great for capturing subjects without disturbing them.
Check out our great selection today...using any of the above will require your camera to be mounted on a tripod - we have a great selection of these too! |
One Large or Many Small Memory Cards?
The higher the capacity of a memory card the less it costs per MB so it is tempting to buy one 16GB card if it's cheaper than four 4GB cards but is it the right thing to do? Here are some things to consider...
ONE LARGE CARD - ADVANTAGES · Great for trips and special occasions - no cards to change · Large cards hold a lot of movies.
ONE LARGE CARD - DISADVANTAGES · Loss is greater if the card is misplaced, the camera with card is stolen, or card is physically damaged. TIP : Label your memory cards with your name and phone number in case one is misplaced · Loss is greater if card becomes corrupted - especially if the entire card becomes unreadable. · Kiosks in camera stores may not let you load your entire card - ours will not load more than 1,000 images. · A camera store can easily copy a 4GB card to a DVD but 8GB or larger involves more work and takes longer - time you may not have when travelling.
MANY SMALL CARDS - ADVANTAGES · They spread the risk - if one card dies, or is lost, not all photos are lost · They are cheaper to buy when extra space is needed.
MANY SMALL CARDS - DISADVANTAGES · Remembering which cards have been used. TIP : number your cards and use them in numerical order. · You need to change cards more often and this could be a hassle part way through a wedding or tour · Not suitable fo HiDef movies |
