Photographic News
Greetings!

Welcome to spring! The daffodils are flowering and the days are getting longer. Great picture-taking opportunities - if only there was more sun than rain!
The rain dampened our World Photography day celebrations but we still managed to have photo shoots around RiffRaff. All day long we had people bringing in their old cameras to show Graham with the oldest camera presented being a McGhie model, circa 1890. Some glass plates were also brought in as well as a daguerrotype.
We have a good selection of INSTANT PHOTO GIFT products in stock at the moment - ideal for Fathers Day - check out the offer at the end of this newsletter.
Instead of a photo competition this month we're having Photo Challenge with a difference. Make sure you've always got your camera with you when wandering around Hamilton over the next few months. Read on...
Photo Challenge!
Your challenge is to capture photos of "Hamilton from a Fresh Angle". Submitted photos will be judged and the best images will be used to produce our Hamilton Photo Calendar. We want something different from the typical "postcard" shots so get creative and capture images of Hamilton icons and scenes from different angles or in a different light.
We will select at least 12 photos for the calendar - more if we create collage pages. The Photographer's name and title of photo will be included with published photos. Calendars will be sold in-store and we will make a donation from the sale of each calendar to a charity of our choice (to be announced nearer Christmas).

Flash Diffusers
SOFTENING THE LIGHT FROM YOUR CAMERA FLASH
Having problems with harsh light and shadows when you use your camera flash? You need a flash diffuser. These soften the light from your flash and help eliminate harsh light and shadows so photos look more natural. Some external flash units come with one built in, but for those that don't you can purchase one as an accessory - they come in all shapes and sizes.
Come in and check out our selection.
Ready for the rowing?
Choose from our great selection of binoculars to bring the rowing action closer.
We have inexpensive models for the glovebox through to those with top quality optics from the German company Steiner.
We look forward to seeing you soon

Whites Balanced?
Christmas Mail
MY BEST FRIEND  PHOTO COMPETITION
Congratulations to these three people who won our "Best Friends" photo competition. Leanne Haddock, Katy Alexander, & Tami Toohey.
Leanne's photo was our top pick and she wins a 20x30inch stretched canvas.
Tami & Katy's photos were our Facebook fans' pics and win a $50 printing voucher each.
How's your White Balance?

The White Balance setting of digital cameras should always be set to AUTO WB unless you understand the consequences of changing it.
We've seen a few customers come in recently with blue tinted photos. When we checked their camera settings the white balance was set to "tungsten" which adds a blue tint to counteract the yellow colour cast of tungsten lamps.  If you change the  the WB setting to counteract a colour cast in a particular situation, always turn it back to AUTO afterwards.
If your outdoor portraits and landscapes look a bit  "cold" warm them up by setting the WB to "cloudy" so that reds and yellow are richer - but don't forget to turn back to AUTO WB when finished.
