College Classic

With tubing gear and sleeping bags in hand, 35 FCA college students trekked through the snow on January 7 to Camp Ihduhapi in Loretto, MN.  They came from all around the state and were eager to connect with other Christian college students and receive a spriritual shot in the arm before starting their spring semester.

"Went to the College Classic this last weekend.  WOOOOW!  Seriously life changing experience.  I feel so pumped up and on fire for the Lord.  What a great way to start the semester."

- Ann, MNSU

 Ministry to Coaches

The FCA ministry to coaches draws coaches to study groups called Legacy Builders. In these small groups, coaches learn how to coach biblically - how to be a Christian coach and not just be a coach who is a Christian. At several  coaches clinics and conferences this year, Ron Backes has challenged coaches to get involved in Legacy Builders. One coach recently wrote, "I'm ready for Legacy Builders. I've attended your breakfasts and lunches at Coaches Clinics for years now and I leave inspired, full of new literature to expand my faith and grow as a disciple."

Taking STEPS
Glenn Martin

Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that "In his heart a man makes his plans, but God directs his steps." At Minnesota FCA, we have made plans and we are taking STEPS to accomplish it - following God's lead.

Our plans are what we call our 2020 Vision - a ministry effectiveness plan that takes us to the year 2020. In a sentence, our 2020 Vision calls for us to triple our ministry impact by 2020; we want to double it in five years. We feel that God is calling us to reach more coaches, more athletes and more schools for Jesus Christ. In addition to this great vision, we have a strategic plan to accomplish it.

STEP 1 - Move the state office to Station 19. God opened this door nearly a year ago and we walked in (well, we sort of stumbled in) on February 10!

STEP 2 - Strengthen the core. The FCA state office needs to provide more services to our staff members in the field - administrative support, communication services (using technology in all its forms), and video products.

STEP 3 - Add staff and volunteers to reach more schools across the state.

God has faithfully provided the staff and the necessary support to accomplish great things for more than four decades. Lives have been forever changed at huddles, camps and in coaches study groups. As we trust in him, our hearts yearn to reach more - challenging coaches and athletes to accept Jesus Christ as Savior and then live for him as the Lord of their lives.  Join us...leave a legacy...help us take these STEPS as we follow God's leading to fulfill the 2020 Vision.

Station 19 open house

On February 10, the state office moved to Station 19, located in the bull's eye of the athletic complex of the U of M.  A recent open house was held, showing what God has so graciously provided at this location in order to grow the high school and college ministry across the state.

Baseball is Just a Game -
It's what you do with your life that matters

Slowey"Baseball is just a game - it's what you do with your life that matters," shares Kevin Slowey, pitcher for the Minnesota Twins at an inspiring Minnesota FCA community outreach event held March 16th at Hammond Stadium in Ft. Myers, Florida.  John "Gordo" Gordon, the voice of the Twins, emceed the event.

Twins pitchers Nick Blackburn and Matt Capps along with center fielder Denard Span and batting practice pitcher Erik Lovdahl joined Slowey after the Twins victory against the New York Mets to share some of their personal challenges in life and their baseball careers and how they lean on God and stay true to their faith in Christ.

Slowey shared that he often reminds his team members when they get discouraged over a defeat or poor performance that baseball is what they "do for a living" - it's their job, and it doesn't determine who they are as people.  For these Christian athletes, baseball is the avenue that God gave them to be disciples and a light to those around them.

This year's event was focused on sharing the Minnesota FCA 2020 Vision with donors, supporters and guests.  A great day of food, fun, fellowship and baseball!

Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier speaks at three FCA banquets
Frazier - W Metro

On March 14 and 15, FCA brought Minnesota Vikings Head Coach, Leslie Frazier, on a three city tour around Minnesota.

West Metro:  "I asked Coach last summer to come and speak not only at our banquet, but also the Rochester and Duluth banquets," commented Jake Vanada, West Metro FCA.   Coach Frazier was then promoted from Defensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach to Head Coach at the end of the season. "For Coach to keep his speaking commitments to us, even though he now had much more responsibility and time commitment with his head coaching role, shows not only his character, but also his commitment to speak about his faith and love for the Lord."

More than doubling in size from the 2009 Fall Banquet, West Metro FCA was able to see more than 390 people at this year's banquet.  Coach laid down a bold and clear message from the Word of God.  We are incredibly grateful to Coach Frazier for both his message and his tremendous support of FCA.

Frazier - DuluthDuluth: On Tuesday, March 15, Coach Fraizer flew to Duluth and spoke at an FCA luncheon. Cal Barr, NE Minnesota FCA, said, "Coach made a powerful impact, calling everyone to consider Jesus as Savior and Lord." Because of this event, several schools are considering starting a huddle and several coaches have expressed interest in the Legacy Builders study with Cal.

Rochester: Completing the two incredible days, Coach Fraizer flew to Rochester for an evening banquet at the Ramada Conference Center. FCA staff members, J.D. Bickle and James Bolin, hosted 360 attendees. Several people responded to Coach's invitation to receive Christ as Savior.

"In the 7 years that the FCA ministry has been in Rochester, there has never been more enthusiasm. Camps, huddles and coaches studies are growing each year," said J.D. "We are thrilled to now have James Bolin on our staff full-time."

Timberwolves Day
Tolliver-Curry

On February 27th, 150 high school and college students and adult FCA leaders crammed into a small room in the basement of the Target Center following the Timberwolves game vs. Golden State Warriors (Wolves won!).  They heard Anthony Tolliver [Timberwolves] and Stephan Curry [Warriors] give their personal testimony of faith in Jesus Christ as professional athletes.

Students asked personal and professional questions - Tolliver and Curry gave solid, steadfast responses. They gave credit to their Lord and Savior for leading and guiding them on their journeys. These players were teammates a year ago. Their testimonies were a great reminder about the friendship and bond in Christ they share regardless of the team they play for.
