| Greetings!
Welcome to our 12th free monthly newsletter! We can't believe that it's been 12 months since we sent out our first newsletter and hope that you have enjoyed reading each one as much as we have enjoyed writing them for you.
This month we are very excited to announce that Nutrition Mission are sponsoring Emma Follis of Aston Villa Ladies Football Club. You can read a little about Emma below. We're looking forward to watching the progress of Emma and her teammates during the 2010/2011 season and hope that they do really well. Nutrition Mission work very closely with the children's integrated cancer charity KICT (www.kict.info) offering nutritional support to children that suffer from cancer, leukarmia and auto-immune diseases, as well as giving support and advice to their families.
Nutrition Mission are now embarking on a new study, with KICT and Alfie's appeal ( www.appeal4alfie.com) to support children both in the hospital and in the community in order to help them through the aggressive treatment necessary to battle these diseases, and to repair the damage caused by the treatments, helping their bodies to tolerate the treatment by reducing the side effects: infections, nausea, weight-loss etc. We will keep you updated on our progress.
The Nutrition Mission Team.

Emma Follis
Aston Villa Ladies
I'm Emma Follis and I play for Aston Villa Ladies FC. I have played for them since the age of 10. Currently I play for the senior team and compete in the Northern Premier League. We play every Sunday against teams such as Manchester City Ladies, Newcastle Ladies and Leicester Ladies.
It is very enjoyable as my team are a great group of girls and I love to get stuck in on the football pitch! I'm currently a student at the University of Birmingham doing Sports and Exercise Science.
Hopefully at the end of my three years there I will go into some sort of Sports Nutrition, as I'm very interested in that aspect of an athlete's lifestyle. |

Detox
Most people think of going on a detoxification diet as fasting but the definition of detoxification is the physiological or medicinal removal of toxic substances from the body and additionally can refer to the period of withdrawal during which the body returns to homeostasis (the term used describe the body being in balance) after long-term use of an addictive substances, such as alcohol, caffeine, herbicides and pesticides from non-organic food and refined sugar as well as sugar substitutes.
This doesn't have to mean jumping into short, sharp fast or starving yourself. It is much healthier to detoxify slowly and carefully. The process of detoxification is the body starting to eliminate, and usually liberate, toxic material. There are 2 phases of liver conjugation (detoxification). The first will liberate toxins and send them through to the second phase, however, if the second phase of detoxification is running slowly because of a big excess of toxins then the toxins broken down by the first phase will be fed back into the body being potentially harmful.
It is much better to commit to a 7 day detoxification diet adhering to the following points:
-
Cut out all toxic substances including; sugar and sugar substitutes, caffeine and alcohol, as well as: wheat products, meat, salt, milk and dairy products, all processed foods, fried foods, spices and dried fruit.
-
Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, particularly: artichokes, peppers, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, cucumber, spinach, tomato, watercress, kale, berries, cantaloupe melon, citrus fruits, kiwi fruit, beetroot, mango, red grapes, papaya, peaches and sweet potato (see this month's recipe for a good detoxification meal).
- Have fresh, line-caught oily fish - salmon, sardines, mackerel or tuna steak - once daily.
- Have oil in moderation. Use extra virgin olive oil, or other seed oils, mixed with lemon juice and raw garlic as a dressing on salad.
- Once daily have grains such as brown rice, corn, millet or quinoa.
- Have 1 multivitamin and mineral supplement (Click Here) twice daily
as well as 1 gram of vitamin C ( Click Here) twice daily
and 1 antioxidant complex ( Click Here) twice daily
- Go for a brisk walk for at least 15 minutes daily.
You may feel unwell for a couple of days as your body gets used to life without foods that it's used to having to deal with, and it's worth remembering that, if you usually have a lot of foods containing refined sugar, sugar is as addictive as cocaine so you may suffer from withdrawal type symptoms.
These simple rules are very general and as we are all different we have different nutritional requirements, if you would like to see a nutritional therapist to assess your exact detoxification requirements please contact us at info@NutritionMission.co.uk to book an appointment.

Baked Sweet Potatoes with Red Pepper Hummus
Serves 6
6 sweet potatoes, scrubbed, rinsed and dried. Olive oil For the red pepper hummus 400g canned chickpeas, drained and rinsed. 2-3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice. 5 tablespoons tahini paste. 2 tablespoons olive oil. 1 garlic clove, crushed. 100g roasted red peppers. Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas Mark 7. Use a fork to prick the potatoes all over then rub the skins with olive oil. Place the potatoes onto the oven rack and roast them for around 35-45 minutes until they are soft when pierced with a knife. While you wait for them to cook make the red pepper hummus as follows: Put the chickpeas and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice into a food processor and wiz it up until it's a smooth paste. Add the tahini paste, olive oil and garlic and wiz again. Add the roasted red peppers and wiz again. Place into the refrigerator to chill until required. When the potatoes are cooked, cut a slit into the top of them lengthways and squeeze them open. Top each potato with a generous helping of the red pepper hummus and serve with an organic, green salad dressed with homemade olive oil, lemon and garlic dressing.
