Greetings!
Independence Day!

"Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it." - Thomas Paine

Let's take a few moments to think about all the sacrifices the men and women of our military and their families have endured to ensure the freedom we all enjoy. Without them we wouldn't be having parades, cookouts, and fireworks this Sunday. Without them, you probably wouldn't be reading this and certainly not in English. Without them, we wouldn't be able to exercise our 2nd Amendment. Without them, we wouldn't have what we have or be who we are! And, we owe you a debt that we can never repay!

On Sunday, July 4th Range USA will give free lane time to anyone who has or is currently serving in any branch of our armed forces as a very small token of our appreciation!

Gun Powder
Gun Powder is a recurring article in Libertas! It is written by a female, from a female's perspective, dealing with female topics, but intended for everyone's benefit! Enjoy!

As you should know, Breath Control is one of the six fundamentals of shooting. But, how important is it?

Well, if you are on a range and someone starts their shooting "advice" with "Watch your breathing!" you can probably ignore anything that person says about marksmanship because they may not understand the subject and the most important fundamentals.  As we know from the February issue of LIBERTAS! and the Gun Powder article (you can read it on our website) -- Sight Alignment and Trigger Control are the two most important fundamentals. The shot will land where your sights are aligned the moment you "caress" the trigger.  Breathing control is much less important in pistol shooting than in rifle shooting due to the shorter distances shot by a pistol shooter. However, it is still important, and should not be ignored.

Breathing involves the rhythmical movement of the chest, abdomen, and the shoulders. This causes the pistol to move about excessively, making it almost impossible to produce an accurate shot. Therefore, you should not simultaneously breathe and try to fire a shot.  Movement of any type, whether caused by breathing or any other factor, will show as motion in the sights. All breath control does is pause the shooter's breathing cycle to help minimize movement. That's it! Pause breathing while caressing the trigger and breathe normally at any other time. Sounds simple, right?

The problem is many shooters tend to hold their breath too long or ignore the cycle all together, which leads to a flinch just to be rid of the chambered round. Breath control alone can't cause shots to go high or low, though it can greatly improve your groupings especially when distance is a factor.

When breathing calmly a person produces an average of 12-13 respiratory cycles a
minute, and one respiratory cycle lasts 4-5 seconds.

So, how do we accomplish breath control?  There are three techniques.

1.     Inhale, exhale, caress the trigger.

2.     Inhale, caress the trigger, exhale.

3.     Inhale, exhale part of the way, caress the trigger, exhale the rest of the way.

In all of the methods you are not holding your breath, rather you are pausing it long enough to fire one shot slow fire, or several shots rapid fire without loss of sight alignment.

Which method is better?  Well, as with anything firearm related, the people you ask will give you their technique as the best or only option.  I really think it comes down to what is most comfortable to you.  Which technique do you feel more stable in when you reach the caress of the trigger step?  For myself, I use the first technique as I feel most stable then. And, there are actual studies that show a person is most stable when their lungs are not inflated. In this technique the pause occurs naturally, as it is the end of one cycle of breath, and the "caress" of the trigger comes before the new cycle begins. During that time the muscles are not strained and are in a relaxed state.  A person can prolong this respiratory pause for seconds without experiencing unpleasant sensations. This time is more than adequate to produce a shot or shots. If the shooter does not produce a shot in 8-10 seconds, he or she should stop aiming and take another breath.

For shooting while moving, some people implement deep measured breaths while on the move, and take shallow "baby" breaths while actually shooting to keep the chest movements from affecting the sight picture.

Easier said than done!  As always the best way to accomplish accuracy is with practice. So, come to Range USA and try all three breath control techniques.  All this typing is giving me the shooting itch, so I am going to shoot now.......Inhale, exhale, caress...BANG!  Wow....nice shot!

"A good place to turn around"

Earlier this year, my family took a little trip to the Smoky Mountains. Quite an adventure, in and of itself, with five boys and me being the oldest at age 5! We mapped out the entire trip and decided which day we were doing which attraction. Well, I was particularly interested in going to the Dinosaur Museum. I had been there before, but not since I learned everything there was to know about dinosaurs! So, I was really excited to educate my family about all the different exhibits and I know they were looking forward to it, too. That day traffic was typical Pigeon Forge traffic - bumper to bumper, up and down the strip. Many of you have been to Pigeon Forge and will know exactly what I am talking about. Well, on the way to the museum, dad missed the entrance! I couldn't believe it! I immediately started yelling, "Dad, you missed the museum! You're going the wrong way!" Dad replied, "I know. I'm looking for a good place to turn around." But, he kept driving! Then, I said, "You're going the wrong way! You are going away from where we need to be!" Again, dad said, "I'm looking for a good place to turn around." Frantically, I yelled, "You're going the wrong way! Turn around! Turn around!" Dad replied, "I'm looking for a good place to turn around." I pleaded, "This is a good place! Turn around right here, right now!"
Are you looking for a good place to turn around? Jesus is pleading with many of us right now to turn around! He knows that we are going the wrong direction. He knows the path we are on is taking us away from Him and His perfect will! And, He is begging and pleading for us to turn around. Many of us know the way we are going is wrong and leading us away from Him. And, we are looking for a good place to turn around, get our lives right, and start living for Him. What we don't realize is that now is the perfect time! And, here is the perfect place! Turn around! God allows U-turns!
