1. NEWS: Famous homeschool dad runs for Congress
Dr. Art Robinson
Dr. Art Robinson

We were so delighted when we heard that Art Robinson was running for Congress in Oregon's 4th Congressional District!

We have known Dr. Robinson for years. As the author (with his children) of the famous Robinson Curriculum, he was one of the first columnists for our magazine, Practical Homeschooling.
He is also a distinguished scientist, with an especially keen understanding of health and energy issues. For many years he has been the editor of Access to Energy. Art and his children were also the initial driving force behind the Petition Project, which has collected over 31,000 signatures from scientists who believe there is no convincing scientific evidence for man-made global warming.

Art has both the scientific chops (Ph.D. in Chemistry from UC San Diego, co-founder with Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling of the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine, president and chief researcher of Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine) and the old-fashioned American common sense to make a real difference in Washington.

PHS #92 coverI'll make it brief:

Practical Homeschooling® magazine is loaded with info you CAN'T find on the Internet.

Want to find out which interactive products (software and websites) homeschoolers consider the best?

Then you need our current issue (pictured to the right). The 107 products in our 2010 i-Learn™ Awards are exclusively found in our magazine.

Want to find out what the proposed "common standards" (really, NATIONAL standards) for curriculum are all about, and what it means to homeschoolers?

Then you need our current issue.

Wondering "Once I've taught the Trivium, then what?" Find yourself avoiding important tasks? Need to know how to win a homeschool science fair? Looking for a dose of "how they did it" inspiration?

All this, and much more, is in our current issue.

I've also added this new guarantee:

If following the advice you'll find in Practical Homeschooling doesn't improve your children's chances of getting into the college of their choice, WITH better scholarships than they otherwise would have received, I'll refund your entire subscription price from this point on. We're talking tens of thousands of dollars here, versus $17.95 a year. So your choice should be easy.

For those of you with younger children:

If subscribing to Practical Homeschooling doesn't show you ways of saving your subscription price MANY times over, I'll refund YOUR entire subscription price from this point on.

If you'd like to see what's in our current issue, click here.

And as the icing on the cake, I've just revised my "Curriculum Secrets," "Homeschooling Secrets," and "Organizing Secrets" brochures. Newly updated, these distill dozens of years of homeschool success into just a few easy-to-read pages. And you can get one (or more) FREE when you subscribe!

3. NEW CONTEST: Janice VanCleave's online science contests for March

JVC logoPractical Homeschooling science columnist (and bestselling author) Janice VanCleave is now offering weekly contests on her site. Each contest has different guidelines as well as different prizes. Winners will be randomly selected and contacted directly via email.  Enter as many times as you wish until you win.

This week's contest will help you answer the question, "Do you think like an engineer?"

4. FUNNY: YouTube videos that made us laugh

While we were enjoying a traditional New England winter here in Missouri, we ran across two YouTube videos we just had to watch more than once:
What does this have to do with homeschooling? Nothing, except to serve as a counterpoint for the remorseless "The End is Nigh and It's Your Fault for Breathing, Little Children" trope found in just about every public-school textbook.
5: SAD: But fascinating, like a train wreck

The talented Bruce Shortt has been sending out his "Continuing Collapse" emails for some time, detailing the many horrors that occur in government schools. ("But not OUR local schools, right?") The result is a surreal blend of failed policies, unqualified teachers who can't be fired, graft and corruption, and other forms of outrageous behavior.

You'd think reading all this would be depressing, but it's actually quite cathartic. Especially if you are already homeschooling!

We talked Bruce into putting his emails online, so folks not on his email list can enjoy tales from the train wreck that is progressive public education. And here is the March issue:

8. Write a Day at Our House diary!

Thanks so much to those of you who responded to this request in our last e-letter.

It's easier than you think to get "published" in a national homeschool magazine. We're always looking for more folks who will share their homeschool day with us.

This is for our "Day at Our House" feature in Practical Homeschooling magazine.

Just keep a diary for one day, type it into your computer, and email it to
inbox@home-school.com.

Either send it as the body text of your email, or as an MSWord ".doc" attachment.

Please put "Day at Our House" in the subject line.

Please also attach a nice, clear, color photo of your family. If possible, show the kids in action, but if not, a regular posed photo is fine. Straight from the digital camera is best -- let us do the color correcting and resizing!

We can't run a diary without a photo, so scan it in or read it in from your camera, but make sure it is included!

Be sure to include your name, address, and telephone number in the body of your email, in case our editor needs to contact you.

Also please provide a "caption" for your photo, so we will know who is who from left to right.

We'd especially love to hear from families who homeschool in unusual or adventurous circumstances -- while sailing, or working with the circus, for example -- or whose kids are engaged in especially interesting or imaginative activities.

But we publish diaries from lots of "regular" homeschool families, too!

Your chances of getting published are very good.

So send your diary in!
