1. LAST LAP: Jessica Hulcy is recovering physically, but . . .
Jessica Hulcy
Have you ever wondered how it REALLY works if your family subscribes to Samaritan Ministries' service rather than having a traditional health-insurance program?

I'm finding out more about how it works by reading about the exciting recovery of KONOS curriculum co-author (and homeschool pioneer) Jessica Hulcy.

As you know if you've been reading our e-letter, our friend Jessica Hulcy had a terrible accident on May 18, 2009.

Her car was broadsided at an intersection as she was taking the family dog to the dog groomer.

Both of Jessica's lungs were punctured and collapsed. She also suffered multiple broken bones, a couple of tears to her diaphragm, and some head trauma. Basically, what she went through would have killed most of us on the spot.

In answer to your prayers, Jessica is home now, going through therapy and improving quite a bit. The good news is that Samaritan Ministries covered $100,000 of her auto wreck health costs. The bad news is that this is their "cap" on auto wrecks, and the total bill came to over $270,000. The better news is that Samaritan Ministries shared Jessica's additional need with their subscriber base, and Jessica has received a heartening response, with lots of small checks sent to her home mailbox. The remaining news is that this still isn't near enough to cover the additional $170,000 (yikes!) bill for the helicopter airlift, hospital, and everything else.

Our interest in all this is that Jessica is a dear friend who actually encouraged us to start our magazine, Practical Homeschooling, many years ago. She has been such an inspiration to the entire homeschool movement for decades, and although she didn't ask us to ask you, I'm sure anything you can do to help her will be very much appreciated.

To find out the latest about Jessica's situation, click here. Through that site, you can also post notes of encouragement.

If you feel led to send Jessica a small gift, you can mail it to her via:

KONOS, Inc.
PO Box 250
Anna, TX 75409

Jessica has come so far, and it would be wonderful if her homeschool friends could help her make it through the "last lap" by helping pay off her remaining health bills.

While Jessica has been going through all this, her family business has managed just fine processing orders for KONOS products, thanks to a lot of people's hard work. So if you were thinking of purchasing KONOS, go right ahead. The Hulcys' website is: www.konos.com.

2. SUBSCRIBE: Don't miss what's coming in Practical Homeschooling!

PHS #91 coverWe've been keeping it low-key and not actually using our e-letter to push hard for subscriptions.

But "ask and ye shall receive," so now I'm asking: please subscribe!

To make our magazine more affordable, we've cut back the subscription price to $17.95 a year.

I've also added this new guarantee:

If following the advice you'll find in Practical Homeschooling doesn't improve your children's chances of getting into the college of their choice, WITH better scholarships than they otherwise would have received, I'll refund your entire subscription price from this point on. We're talking tens of thousands of dollars here, versus $17.95 a year. So your choice should be easy.

For those of you with younger children:

If subscribing to Practical Homeschooling doesn't show you ways of saving your subscription price MANY times over, I'll refund YOUR entire subscription price from this point on.

In addition, you'll receive lots of encouragement, fun subscriber-only contests for your children, inside info on how other homeschool families do it, and frequent "heads up" on educational trends you won't find in other homeschool magazines (OR websites).

And when and if we ever get our new subscribers-only website up, you'll have EXCLUSIVE access to our database of THOUSANDS of product reviews (written by professional reviewers who have a lot more to say than whether they "liked" a product or not).

If you'd like to see what's in our current issue, click here.

Thanks, and I hope you'll be joining us soon!
3. VOTE IN OUR POLL: How is the economy affecting your homeschool?

So far, 93 people have voted in our latest poll, and only 1 family has said they will be putting one or more children back into public school due to the recession.

You'll never guess how many are actually INCREASING the amount they are spending on education . . . at least, unless you view the poll results!

We'd like to hear from more of you, to get a better "picture" of how homeschoolers are (or aren't) being affected by the economy, so please vote now!

4. INFO: 11 new articles on our website
We frequently add new articles to our site. These are actually "old" (but still extremely useful) articles from past issues of Practical Homeschooling magazine.

Here are some of the 11 articles we recently added. These are NOT the same articles listed in our last e-letter, BTW, but 11 brand-new (or brand-old) ones:

5. BOOK: Your guide to the world of homeschooling

Mary Pride's Complete Guide NOTE: We purchased ALL the remaining stock from the publisher and sold most of it. Out of thousands of copies sold, only a few dozens are left.

6. Write a Day at Our House diary!

Thanks so much to those of you who responded to this request in our last e-letter.

I guess some of you didn't believe how easy it is to get "published" in a national homeschool magazine, because we're still looking for more folks who will share their homeschool day with us.

This is for our "Day at Our House" feature in Practical Homeschooling magazine.

Just keep a diary for one day, type it into your computer, and email it to
inbox@home-school.com.

Either send it as the body text of your email, or as an MSWord ".doc" attachment.

Please put "Day at Our House" in the subject line.

Please also attach a nice, clear, color photo of your family. If possible, show the kids in action, but if not, a regular posed photo is fine. Straight from the digital camera is best -- let us do the color correcting and resizing!

We can't run a diary without a photo, so scan it in or read it in from your camera, but make sure it is included!

Be sure to include your name, address, and telephone number in the body of your email, in case our editor needs to contact you.

Also please provide a "caption" for your photo, so we will know who is who from left to right.

We'd especially love to hear from families who homeschool in unusual or adventurous circumstances -- while sailing, or working with the circus, for example -- or whose kids are engaged in especially interesting or imaginative activities.

But we publish diaries from lots of "regular" homeschool families, too!

Your chances of getting published are very good.

So send your diary in!
