1. PRAYERS ANSWERED: Jessica Hulcy accident update
Jessica Hulcy
Most homeschoolers are familiar with KONOS, the original unit-study homeschool curriculum.

As you know if you read our last e-letter, its co-creator, our friend and homeschool pioneer Jessica Hulcy, had a terrible accident on May 18.

Her car was broadsided at an intersection as she was taking the family dog to the dog groomer.

Both of her lungs were punctured and collapsed. She also suffered multiple broken bones, a couple of tears to her diaphragm, and some head trauma. Basically, what she went through would have killed most of us on the spot.

The hospital did an operation to repair the diaphragm, and also put her on a ventilator. It all looked pretty dire, but thanks to your prayers, Jessica has been off the ventilator, out of the hospital, and home for some while, making great progress. She still has pain, and faces lots of rehab, so your continuing prayers are appreciated.

To find out the latest about Jessica's situation, click here. Through this site, you can also post notes of encouragement.

While Jessica has been going through all this, her family business has managed just fine processing orders for KONOS products, thanks to a lot of people's hard work. So if you were thinking of purchasing KONOS, go right ahead. The Hulcys' website is: www.konos.com.

2. A HERO PASSES: A Tribute to Chris Klicka
Chris Klicka
World-famous homeschool advocate Chris Klicka passed away on the afternoon of Monday, October 12, after a 15-year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Despite his increasingly debilitating illness, this devoted husband and father of seven homeschooled children maintained an impressive work schedule as Senior Counsel and speaker for Homeschool Legal Defense Association, as well as authoring several notable homeschool books.

While attempting to attend the National Homeschool Conference in Colorado Springs, CO, Chris had to be admitted to the hospital. After it became clear his condition was terminal, he was admitted to hospice, where he passed away.

You can see the record of Chris's final days here.

For many years, Chris was a columnist for our magazine, Practical Homeschooling. We talked often about many topics. His concern always was for others: helping them raise their families well and fighting for the rights of all homeschoolers.

We are sure Chris's deep Christian faith helped him face his many trials, as did the love and support of his wife and family.

There is an article about Chris in the just-out issue of Practical Homeschooling, which details just a few of his major contributions to the homeschool movement. You can also read over two dozen of the articles he wrote for Practical Homeschooling here.

If you feel led to make a donation to the Klicka family in memory of Chris, HSLDA tells us the best way would be to give something to the children's college education accounts for the children.  Checks should be made payable to College America, designated for the Klicka Education Account, and mailed to The Klicka Family, 6779 Riley Road, Warrenton, VA 20187.
3. NEW POLL: How is the economy affecting homeschooling?

Are you spending more on homeschooling? Less? The same? Are you taking a child out of public, private, or Christian school to homeschool him . . . or the reverse?

We have started seeing articles claiming this or that, but we'd like to KNOW.

Is the recession (or, if you prefer to think of it that way, the "recovery" :) ) making any changes to your educational plans?

Please let us know!

5. SWINE FLU: What's hot and what's not

Like you, we've spent hours checking out facts and rumors about this on the web.

So far, swine flu doesn't seem to be the killer we've been warned about.

We've compiled some of the more interesting conspiracy tales here:

Swine flu pandemic conspiracy
Swine flu lab produced and nefarious
Want chips with that?

And just in:
Ukranian plague (this was on the front page of Drudge on Monday)
Ukranian authorities deny airplanes spraying aerosols (scroll far enough down the page and you'll find stories and video about an Israeli microbiologist who claimed in August a "bioweapon" was being created in the Ukraine)

I'm not saying I disbelieve what these folks have to say. Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean someone isn't out to get you!

And here's a humorous video on the topic you should not miss:

How to make your own vaccine

But seriously, folks, here's what WE use to kill all colds and flus dead. (No, this is not an ad -- just some non-medical information sharing from our family's experience.)

Dr. Schultz's Cold and Flu Shot has nothing to do with syringes. It's a drink-in-a-small-bottle that you gargle and swallow at the first sign of sore throat, runny nose, or other flu symptom. You can accomplish the same thing by taking 6 squirts of his SuperTonic and 12 of his Echinacea tonic along with a little apple juice (actually, I usually just use water).

Every single time I've started having those symptoms in the last couple years this routine has stopped the illness before it could progress. (And I used to get sick 2-4 or more times each winter.)

With all this chatter of swine flu, and not really trusting the vaccine AT ALL, I have purchased a couple bottles of Echniacea and SuperTonic for each of my kids who lives away from home.

Obviously, if you're experiencing acute symptoms, you should go to an emergency room. And if you have any allergies or organ weaknesses, you definitely should consult your doctor before taking anything new, including this.

Find these Dr. Schultz products online here.

8. Write a Day at Our House diary!

We're looking for folks who will share their homeschool day with us.

This is for our "Day at Our House" feature in Practical Homeschooling magazine.

Just keep a diary for one day, type it into your computer, and email it to
inbox@home-school.com.

Either send it as the body text of your email, or as an MSWord ".doc" attachment.

Please put "Day at Our House" in the subject line.

Please also attach a nice, clear, color photo of your family. If possible, show the kids in action, but if not, a regular posed photo is fine. Straight from the digital camera is best -- let us do the color correcting and resizing!

We can't run a diary without a photo, so scan it in or read it in from your camera, but make sure it is included!

Be sure to include your name, address, and telephone number in the body of your email, in case our editor needs to contact you.

Also please provide a "caption" for your photo, so we will know who is who from left to right.

We'd especially love to hear from families who homeschool in unusual or adventurous circumstances -- while sailing, or working with the circus, for example -- or whose kids are engaged in especially interesting or imaginative activities.

But we publish diaries from lots of "regular" homeschool families, too!

Your chances of getting published are very good.

So send your diary in!
