RECENT EVENTS

Valentines Day Donor Drives, Aspen and Portland

Beaverton High School Students

Valentines Day is a day to celebrate love. Aspen High School and Beaverton High School did just that by hosting a donor drive! Aspen High School students donated 25 pints of blood, and Beaverton High registered over 70 people for the bone marrow registry that day! Great job to Tori Morris, Kate Dowley and the other student organizers who planned such incredible donor drives.

Fairview High 9Health Fair, Boulder

Do you have the Guts?

On February 17, Donor Dudes was part of the Fairview High School 9Health Fair in Boulder, CO. Over 500 students visited the Donor Dudes table that day. Our donor advocate, Virginia Gebhart, introduced a neat way to promote donation by coordinating a poster contest among the students. The poster submissions were creative, inspiring and thoughtful pieces reflecting on donation. The one pictured here is the winning poster by Susan Xu (The script on the poster is Chris's transplant story). The students at Fairview embraced the message of Donor Dudes and are making a difference by sharing the facts. Thanks to our Donor Dude ambassadors Virginia and the Fairview High National Honor Society for executing this excellent donor awareness event!

World Kidney Day at University of Miami

Donate Life Team

March 8 was World Kidney Day, a day to promote awareness of the issues surrounding kidney disease. A kidney recipient and Alumni at University of Miami, Jill Morton, volunteered to help plan a World Kidney Day awareness event on campus. Jill invited us to be a part of the event to help educate students about donation. They registered 10 new donors that day, and encouraged hundreds more to know the fact and share their donation decision. We were happy to be part of the event and look forward to next year! Thank you Jill for your hard work making World Kidney Day a success.

Elk Mountain Grand Traverse, Aspen to Crested Butte

CK and Jon after race!

Congratulations to Chris Klug and CKF board member, Jon Gibans for completing another Elk Mountain Grand Traverse this past Saturday. They skied through the night from Crested Butte, Colorado finishing in ten hours forty two minutes at the base of Aspen Mountain on cross country skis. The team proudly raced to raise awareness for organ & tissue donation. They rocked CKF/Donor Dudes stickers and buttons on all of their gear and finished with big smiles! Chris shared "It was a hardcore race, but an awesome event. Skiing down Star Pass in the dark was sketchy, but watching the sun rise over Taylor Pass was worth it. Thanks to the race committee, sponsors and volunteers for a great race."

DID YOU KNOW: (Courtesy of Donate Life America)

Fact: One donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and enhance more than 100 lives through tissue donation.

Fact: There are currently 113,714 people currently on the national transplant waiting list.

Fact: If you are sick or injured and admitted to the hospital, the number one priority is to save your life. Organ, eye and tissue donation can only be considered after you are deceased

Fact: Anyone can be a potential donor regardless of age, race, or medical history

Fact: All major religions in the United States support organ, eye and tissue donation and see it as the final act of love and generosity toward others.

These are some pretty eye-opening facts! Here is how you can do your part:

  • Educate yourself and your friends on the facts about organ and tissue donation. Work to spread the word in a cool way at your school or in your community.
  • Each state is different in terms of how you properly register to be a donor. LOG ON to find out what your state requires, and follow the necessary steps.
  • Be sure to share your decision with your family, and encourage your friends to do the same.
  • Together we can eliminate the wait!
