plan your summer indoor/outdoor workout
As Chicago's summer season approaches, many of us turn our attention to the great outdoors. Whether you're into golfing, tennis, swimming or running, i.d. gym can help you get the most out of your summer game.

A Round of Golf, Caveman-Style

Golf has many physical benefits. The repetition of swinging clubs for a round of 18 holes can help tone muscles in the arms, back and shoulders. It may also improve flexibility and range of motion. Plus if you skip the golf cart and walk the course with a bag of clubs, you've got a low-impact cardiovascular activity.

But what you can't get from golfing, you can get from i.d. gym's Caveman Workout. Our latest group fitness innovation combines high-intensity strength building and cardio drills with sledgehammers, sandbags, slosh tubes and 50-feet of heavy-duty rope. Available on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays, the Caveman Workout can help you build your core strength that you can apply on the golf course. Fore!

Strengthen Your Core, Improve Your Running

We all know the benefits of running. A high-intensity cardiovascular activity that burns body fat, eats calories and reduces stress, running or jogging also is great way to strengthen your heart, increase your blood circulation and improve your respiratory system.

What happens if you combine the benefits of running with i.d. gym's Ab Blast group fitness class? This is a 30-minute class, offered on Tuesday mornings and evenings, that you can add into your routine. This class helps you build core strength -- and that will help improve your performance on the running trails. When you have a strong core, according to research, you'll improve your body's efficiency and help reduce the chance of injuries. Plus, you can get a slim belly and rock-hard abs!

A Fish Out of Water

Swimming offers an easy-on-the-body workout that strengthens nearly every major muscle group, from the shoulders to the glutes. Since water provides more resistance than air in every direction, swimming can help you get fit, build strength and improve your cardiovascular health.

You can get many of the same benefits from i.d. gym's Body Sculpt group fitness class. Available daily Monday through Saturday, these high-intensity Body Sculpt classes help you build upper body strength, lower-body strength and core strength by using hand weights, resistance tubing and BOSU trainers that target every part of the body. After one of our Body Sculpt classes, you'll slice through the pool like Michael Phelps. Well, at least a little like Michael Phelps.

Bootcamp, Anyone?

When you go the U.S. Tennis Association's website, you'll find a list of 17 fitness benefits that you'll develop by playing tennis -- from improving your aerobic and anaerobic fitness to increasing your speed, agility and coordination.

You can actually improve upon your tennis game with Bootcamp, a group fitness class available every Wednesday and Friday at i.d. gym. When you play tennis, you're constantly on your toes with forward, backward and lateral movements. These are the same motions you'll follow in our Bootcamp classes, which interlace strength training with plyometric drills for one of the most intense workouts that you've ever had. You've been served!

introducing outdoor group fitness classes
outdoorYoga
Every year in Chicago we work our way through the chilly autumn, frigid winter and rainy spring seasons for the joys of summer. Whether its a picnic in Lincoln Park or a stroll along Lake Michigan, it's hard to get to the gym when there are so many outdoor activities beckoning you.

At i.d gym, we make the decision easy for you by taking some of our most popular group fitness classes to the great outdoors, beginning in June.

Spin Out!

Pull into i.d. gym's parking lot and hop onto a spinning bike. Starting Tuesday, June 1, you'll jump, jog, sprint and climb to your favorite tracks. Spinning is a fun way to burn calories -- and it's even better outside.

Camp Out!

Our high-intensity Bootcamp class becomes Camp Out! on Wednesdays, starting June 2. You'll get the same great military-style heart-pumping, muscle-burning workout -- under Chicago's sunny skies.

Junkyard Workout

On Thursdays, starting June 3, the Caveman Workout becomes the Junkyard Workout. Using old tires, sledgehammers, sandbags, slosh tubes and heavy rope, you'll experience a high-intensity, strength-building workout.

Pace Out!

Pace!, our popular indoor treadmill class, becomes Pace Out! on Saturdays, starting June 5. Instead of simulating hills on a treadmill, you'll experience the real deal through the streets of Lincoln Park. You'll still take on the same great sprinting intervals and endurance drills.

Yoga in the Park

Beginning Saturday, June 5, we take our Yoga Basics class to Jonquil Park, located at the corner of Lincoln and Wrightwood avenues. Sign in and pick up a yoga mat at i.d. gym's front desk and then make your to our favorite neighborhood park for a series of sun salutations like never before. This class will be open to the public.

Note: All classes will be offered in our fitness studios during rainy weather.

our mission at i.d. gym

At i.d. gym, we believe that helping you reach your fitness goals requires an approach as unique as you are.

We know that one program does not fit all, so we take the time to get you know you and find out what you want from your gym. If we can offer your favorite class or piece of equipment, we'll do it. If there's a instructor or trainer who motivates you, we want to get them involved.

Even something as simple as knowing your name when you come in the door can make your experience at i.d. gym something special. Unlike the big chain gyms, we want your fitness program to have a personal touch. Creating a friendly environment keeps things fun, helps you stay on track and may even push you to achieve goals you never thought you could.

It's your workout, make the most of it!
