Juneteenth is a celebration of African American freedom and achievement. It was originated to commemorate the day that enslaved Africans in Texas received formal notification of their emancipation on June 19, 1865, more than two and a half years after the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation. The Amistad Center takes this opportunity to also celebrate African American cultural contributions and encourage awareness and pride. Proceeds from the Juneteenth Celebration Gala benefit The Amistad Center's exhibitions and culture-based programs and enable the preservation and development of its collection of 7,000 objects.
