Giving Used Scanners A Face Lift

When reselling used equipment, all dealers attempt to spruce up the system as much as is possible. However, the document shelf on most scanners becomes worn, and no amount of elbow grease can bring the original markings back.

One Xerox dealer in Cleveland, Ohio decided that the used Synergix scanners they were selling needed a face lift. Utilizing their expertise with wide format color printing and materials; the ingenious folks at Repros created a solution in-house. They developed artwork and created an appliqué which makes the document shelf on the Synergix scanner look like new. If you want to give your used Synergix scanners a new lease on life,
contact Repros for the solution. Call Lou LaGuardia Sr. 330-607-2750.
8850 / 510 BTR Contacts Revisited

Although neither the upper or lower BTR contacts on the 8850/510 are expensive parts, they can both fail on a regular basis. This in turn results in the cost of a service call and unwanted customer down time. Here are simple measures that you can use to extend the life of these two parts.

Upper BTR Contact
For the upper BTR contact, adding some solder to the tip will greatly extend the life of this part. The solder will hold up to the wear caused by the rotating BTR shaft much longer than the copper of the contact alone will. Before adding solder to the tip, be sure to clean the surface of the contact with alcohol. We recommend the use of water-clean or no-clean solder, as many types of solder flux can have a long term corrosive effect on the copper.
 Lower BTR Contact
For the lower BTR contact, a simple adjustment of the contact angle will insure that it lasts for many years.

If you have ever seen a lower BTR contact with a wear line through the center of it, this was due to the fact that the contact was misadjusted. This wear line is caused by the lower BTR contact rubbing against the edge of the BTR roller.

When properly adjusted, this contact should only make contact with the upper BTR contact. Typically, the way the lower BTR contact is formed when new has the angle of the contact badly misadjusted. When viewed from the side, the contact should just barely extend above the plastic body.

Before installing a new lower BTR contact, bend the brass contact so the upper edge is as shown above. Also, when installing the lower BTR contact, adjust its angle so that the top surface of the plastic is parallel with the underside of the Xerographic module as viewed from the side of the machine. View the edge of the contact assembly through the opening next to the HVPS. As you push the fuser drawer in, you will observe the media transport come up to meet the Xerographic module. It is at this point when you will see the relationship between the lower BTR contact and the media transport.

Properly adjusted and prepared BTR contacts will help you eliminate wasted customer down time and avoid unnecessary service calls!
Enter The World of Wholesale Used Equipment

Harry's Equipment
Over time, we have all needed to buy or sell used wide format gear. In the world of wholesalers, there are good and bad players. Understand that individual equipment wholesalers do not set the prices for used equipment, current market forces do that. Also, when working through an equipment wholesaler, don't expect to realize retail values when liquidating your old used equipment. This will be true dealing with any equipment wholesaler. However, what you do want is a wholesaler who knows the industry, has a proven track record, and is one you may trust.

There are two equipment wholesalers with whom I have worked for many years. Through those experiences, I have come to trust and rely upon them for their knowledge and ethical conduct. Ted Collins and Harry McPartland are both very experienced with wide format equipment, and have contacts around the world. Ted is located on the East Coast, and Harry operates his main location in Sunny California. I have been friends with Harry & Ted for many years, and give them both unequivocal recommendations.

With either Ted or Harry, you can expect to receive a fair market price. They can assist you in liquidating older equipment that has been clogging up your warehouse. You will also want to talk with these guys if you are in the market for used digital equipment at a reasonable price. When purchasing used equipment from either of them, you will be assured of getting the equipment from a reliable source.
