Greetings!

Each time I sit down to compose a newsletter, I am amazed at how much I want to tell you!  At this time of year, when many health clubs are slowing down for the summer season, we're working hard to bring you some exciting events to keep you motivated.  But we're not going to decide on them all by ourselves, we want to hear from YOU!  See below for some potential offerings this spring/summer with your opportunity to vote on what we actually offer.

Coming up sooner than later are the 2nd session of  "Life Strategies for Lowering Stress: Mindfulness Meditation" with Jill Abilock, as well as a more energetic way to beat stress with Dana Apgar's "Women's Boxing for Fitness".  You'll find more details on these great programs below.

As the weather gets warmer, update your workout wardrobe with the coupon you'll find at the end of the newsletter and save 25% on your entire retail purchase (some restrictions apply).

And speaking of wardrobes, are you ready for bathing suit weather? It'll be here before you know it!  If you need a little bit of help getting ready for the beach, take advantage of our Introductory Personal Training Offer.  Choose Tara, Rayne, Patricia or Dana and enjoy three private sessions for only $99!

Anyway, as you can see, I have lots to tell you about. Read on!

A Spinning Story of No-Shows

SpinningOne recent Wednesday evening at Shelburne Health & Fitness, we were preparing for a regularly scheduled Spinning class.  As members began to arrive, we began checking them into the classes for which they came.  On this particular Wednesday, there were 6 members who were waiting to see if there was any room in this already full Spinning class.  Unfortunately, these members had to wait until just past 5:30, after the class had arleady begun because there were coincidentally 6 members who were signed up for the class, but who did not arrive in time for the class, nor did they call to let us know that they were not coming.  This is a story that happens far too often.

If you are signed up for a class, PLEASE CALL at least 2 hours ahead of class time to let us know if you will NOT be attending.  If you will be attending, but are running late, please also call us so that we can save your bike for you.  As per our rules and policies, if you do not call ahead to let us know that you will not be coming, and there was a waiting list for that class, you will be charged $5 for the missed class.

CLASS CANCELLATIONS - WHY DO THEY HAPPEN?

You're among a handful of people who regularly attend a class, and one day, to your dismay, you find out that Shelburne Health & Fitness will no longer be offering that class.  You are understandably disappointed and wonder why this happened.

Members recently faced this issue with the cancellation of a few of our classes.  Although we responded one-on-one to many members, we thought it would be good to respond to our membership as a whole.

First of all, we do not like to cancel classes.  When we put classes on the schedule, we anticipate that the class and the instructor will be successful - that many of our members will take advantage of the classes and recommend them, and the club, to their friends.  Often, this happens, as is evidenced by the many classes that have waiting lists.  Also regularly, this doesn't happen.  Whether it's the class type, the instructor's style, the instructor's music, the time of day, the day of the week, etc. Despite being on the class schedule for months, the class just does not grow - or it dwindles away.  This class is likely to be cancelled.

Why?  For many reasons including:
1) Economics - As much as SH&F would like to offer an extensive list, we need to at least break even financially.  During the slower periods (such as late spring, summer, and early fall), club income drops off substantially.  We need to compensate for this by cutting expenses.
2) Given the limited number of rooms that can accomodate classes, we sometimes have to cancel one class in order to bring in something fresh and exciting.
3) The attendance just has not been growing, indicating that perhaps we should be offering something different in that time slot.

What can you do about this?
1) If you notice that your favorite class(es) are lightly attended, please encourage your friends and fellow club members to try it out!  We would not dream of cancelling a full class!
2)  If your favorite class is cancelled, and there was a core group of members attending, speak to Rayne, Ute, or the instructor of the class to make it a paid - semi-private group class open to those who are willing to pay extra for it.
3) Support the decision and anticipate what might be offered in the future in that time slot or look forward to that class possibly coming back again in the future.  Like I said, we do not enjoy cutting classes; however, when the decision has been made, it has been made with careful thought for many reasons (attendance being only one of them).  We want this to be the strongest club around - with the best class offerings we can offer.

What are we doing about this?
1) We are indentifying some of the key factors in making cancellation decisions. Once this list is complete, we will share it with you.
2) We are going to change our class scheduling to a 3-month basis - rather than an on-going one.  Instructors of less-attended classes will be notified at the end of the 2nd month if their classes are under-performing.  If these classes continue to under-perform, they will be removed or replaced for the next 3-month session.  It will be our hope that the instructors will share this with their students to enlist your help in saving the class.

One day, when the club's membership is full and profitable, perhaps we will not have to pare down our offerings; however, in the present economic climate, we would be risking the existance of the club you love by not doing so.  We welcome your comments.
